Chris Eubank Jr will battle Liam Smith this weekend in a 12-round boxing match. Eubank Jr was set to fight Conor Benn in October 2022. However, the fight was cancelled due to Benn failing a drug test. The middleweight boxer will now take on a multi-time champion in one of the biggest fights of the month. 

Smith has held championship belts previously and will see Eubank Jr as a stepping stone to bigger paydays. However, Smith will need to defeat the favourite, Eubank Jr, to land bigger opponents and larger payouts. 

Eubank Jr and Smith will headline a seven-fight card this weekend. The show will also see exciting bouts between Joseph Parker and Jack Massey, and Ekow Essuman versus Chris Kongo. You won’t want to miss the great boxing action.

Chris Eubank Jr goes into the fight as the bookmakers’ favourite to win. The fight is on a six-match winning streak ahead of this weekend. Eubank Jr has not boxed in 12 months and could have some ring rust on him. 

Smith is on a three-fight win streak and fought as recently as September 2022. The Liverpudlian will have plenty of fans on hand in Manchester to cheer him on. His last three wins all came via knockouts. In April 2022, Smith fought in Madison Square Garden and won the vacant WBO Inter-Continental light-middleweight title. 

Who is the Favourite? 

Eubank Jr is the favourite according to leading sportsbooks. However, he isn’t a massive favourite. Yes, the fighter is odds on to win at 1/3 but the odds could be more in Eubank Jr’s favour. Smith is the underdog at attractive odds of 12/5. He could pull off an upset fighting in Manchester, just a short drive from his hometown of Liverpool. 

Smith last fought in Manchester in April 2017 against Liam Williams. Williams retired during the fight after nine rounds. Smith is a competent fighter who has a strong reputation. A win would put Smith on target for bigger fights down the line.

Chris Eubank Jr Record 

Eubank Jr was set to fight Conor Benn to renew his father’s rivalry in October. However, the fight was called off at the last minute due to Benn testing positive for a banned substance. The boxers are expected to fight sometime down the line, but for now, Eubank Jr will touch gloves with Smith. 

“Next Gen” has a record of 32-2 with 23 wins by knockouts and nine decisions. Both of Eubank Jr’s defeats were courtesy of decisions. The boxer is on a six-match win streak ahead of Saturday’s middleweight clash. 

Eubank Jr’s last defeat was in February 2018, when he lost to George Groves at Manchester Arena by a unanimous decision. “Next Gen” lost the IBO Super Middleweight title. He has since won the belt back along with the vacant interim WBA Middleweight belt.

Liam Smith Record 

Liam Smith has won his last three fights, with all three being won by TKO. During his three-match win streak, Smith won the WBA International Light-Middleweight belt and the WBO Inter-Continental Light-Middleweight title. 

Smith is an accomplished fighter and could make a mark on Eubank Jr. Smith has a record of 32-3, with 19 wins by knockout and 13 via decision. He lost one fight via knockout and two by decision. 

Smith’s knockout loss came back in September 2016 when famed boxer Canelo Alvarez knocked him out at AT&T Stadium in Dallas, Texas. Smith lost the WBO Light-Middleweight championship. The Liverpudlian cannot be taken lightly by fans. 

Eubank Jr has called Smith a “competent fighter”. However, Smith is a top fighter and according to the Liverpudlian, Eubank Jr doesn’t win against top-level boxers.
