England v Pakistan Tips

England lead Pakistan 6-4 in all head-to-head ICC matches and have also won eight of the last 10 meetings, so Eoin Morgan's side will be feeling confident ahead of this semi-final. The last time these two teams faced each other in an ICC event was during the 2010 World T20, where England emerged winners, and you’ll need to go back to the 1996 World Cup for the last time Pakistan beat England in an ICC event.

Who are the favourites?

England came into the tournament as favourites and although India are now an identical best price of $2.40 lift the trophy, I’m not sure it’s deserved. The home side's batting and bowling is equally strong and they’ve been good in the field too. They've won matches from comfortable positions and a very precarious position against Australia - doing what they like best, which is chasing down a total.

What a turnaround for Pakistan. Just last week they were humbled by neighbours India, now they're in the semis of the Champions Trophy against the hosts. They bowled fast and with good, steady lines and lengths against Sri Lanka, making the ball seam around from back of a length. We tipped Sarfaraz Ahmed to top score for Pakistan at $12.00 and he did so, delivering a gritty innings albeit with some extra lives handed to him by some inexcusably bad catching.

England are available at $1.34 which is decent value in my book, if you’re looking to make a quick-ish buck. Pakistan, while always unpredictable, have talented players who can deliver on the big stage. They’re priced at $3.50 although they are as short as $3.25 with certain, more wary bookmakers!

What’s your recommended bet for England vs Pakistan?

Liam Plunkett Top Bowler @ $4.00 - BET NOW

If England go on to win the tournament, they’d have a few contenders for player of the tournament within their ranks, including Ben Stokes, Morgan and Joe Root. But don’t rule out the resurgent Liam Plunkett crowning his late-blooming career by bowling England to glory. His England career has been a strange one, often dropped for years at a time before being recalled but he’s taken eight wickets so far and I think he’ll run Pakistan ragged in Cardiff on Wednesday.

In this tournament, Pakistan have lost the majority of their wickets to balls that are banged in short of a length. They just can’t seem to cope with a bit of aggressive, short pitched bowling. I’m am very doubtful that we’ll see them bat out the 50 overs and as Plunkett is such a fine exponent of the short ball, I’m backing him to take most wickets in the match at odds of $4.00.
