England's red-ball squad is back in action in what looks like a huge series as they take on the might of India in a five-Test series, with the first match set to get underway on Wednesday, August 4.

Both sides have had Test experience in England coming into this series, although both were beaten by New Zealand, with the tourists falling to the Black Caps in a one-off Test in the World Test Championship final while England fell to a 1-0 defeat in a two-match affair just prior to that showpiece.

England vs India Betting Odds

England had enjoyed a four-series win streak going into the reverse series earlier this year, and even started well on the sub-continent by winning the first Test, following on from a 2-0 success in Sri Lanka.

India comprehensively turned the tide to win the next three Tests on home soil to claim the series 3-1 but cricket in India is a much different beast to playing in England, and it is the hosts who are shorter in the betting to enjoy a positive result at a best-price 7/4, with Virat Kohli's men the outsiders at 14/5.

However, with the forecasts not looking too good, particularly on Thursday and Friday, there is the very real prospect of some time being lost, and the draw is the favourite at 6/4.

England vs India Team News

Key all-rounder and talismanic figure Ben Stokes will be a massive miss for the Three Lions as he has taken an indefinite break from the sport to help ensure his mental well-being as well as rest what has been a troublesome finger injury

Neither Jofra Archer or Chris Woakes are fit enough for the squad, although Ollie Robinson is back from suspension, while Jonny Bairstow, Haseeb Hameed and Craig Overton have been recalled to the squad from various lengths of absence.

Shubman Gill, Washington Sundar and Avesh Khan have all been ruled out of the India squad through injury, although Rishabh Pant looks set to play in the first Test after overcoming Covid-19.

Opener Mayank Agarwal will miss the opening match due to concussion protocols after being struck in the nets, but Ajinkya Rahane has been cleared to play following a hamstring niggle.

England vs India Prediction

India to win - BET NOW

This could be seen as being a little risky due to the threat of rain as well as India's recent record in England but they look too big at the prices, considering the hosts' fragile batting line-up.

Each side's strength appears to be in the bowling department and this match will be ended before five days are up, so it does depend on how much time is lost due to the weather.

New Zealand beat India in a little over 300 overs in the World Test Championship final, while they needed barely 270 to beat England in the second Test to claim that series.

India have enough threats with the ball in hand and are arguably more reliable with the bat, so nearly 3/1 on an away win should be considered.

Jonny Bairstow Top England Runscorer (1st Innings) - BET NOW

Joe Root is the only dependable batsman that England have, particularly with Stokes ruled out, but that is reflected in the betting with the Yorkshire ace priced at 2/1.

Bairstow is a player who likes to prove a point and having been dropped, more than once, he returns to the side at least with some runs to his name, having flayed 56 and 72 in two innings in The Hundred.

That should give him some confidence while he is also likely to be protected from the new ball behind Zak Crawley, Root and Ollie Pope, and he offers a bit more value at 4/1.

James Anderson Top England Bowler (1st Innings) - BET NOW

Veteran Anderson is showing no signs of slowing down and has been able to recharge following the New Zealand series, so should be fresh going into the opening India clash.

He often saves his best for Kohli's side, having taken 118 wickets in 30 matches against India, and he will look to spearhead England's attack once again with conditions in his favour.
