The eagerly-anticipated new Hundred cricket competition gets underway this week, and the first game in the men's tournament takes place at a sold-out Oval on Thursday when the Invincibles host the Manchester Originals.

After being delayed by the pandemic, the new format, which sees each team getting 100 balls, made up of 10, 10-ball overs, should start with a bang when two talented and seemingly evenly-matched teams go head-to-head in south London.

The home side are slight favourites at 4/5 to win, but Manchester cannot be dismissed lightly and are 1/1 to start the eight-team competition with an important victory.

With a plethora of home and international star players on show, there should be fireworks for the fans at The Oval as everyone associated with cricket, barring a few critical traditionalists, hopes this brand-new format gets off to an entertaining start. With that in mind, it's 1/5 for there to be a 50 scored in the match and a tempting 10/1 for someone to fire a rapid century.

Oval Invincibles vs Manchester Originals Team News

Both teams have exciting squads to choose from. Jos Buttler is probably the stand-out name in Manchester's ranks, and the England star comes into this clash following an impressive 59 off 39 balls for England in the T20 win over Pakistan at Headingley on Sunday.

Others of note in the Originals' expected line-up include Phil Salt, who did well in England's recent ODI series with Pakistan, while New Zealander Colin Munro will also fancy his chances of a big score with the bat on the day.

Experienced pace bowler Lockie Ferguson and new England spinner Matt Parkinson add depth to Simon Katich's Originals' squad, who also has the likes of Carlos Brathwaite, Ollie Robinson and Steven Finn to rely on.

The Invincibles, who are led by another top-notch Australian in Tom Moody, will look to Jason Roy for quick early runs with Rory Burns among those keen to make his mark.

Invincibles' bowling capabilities look particularly strong with Sam Curran, Saqib Mahmood and West Indian Sunil Narine leaping off the teamsheet. Mahmood recently starred for England with figures of 9-123 in the three ODIs against Pakistan, while spinner Narine is a veteran of 162 ODI's and 52 T20I's.

Will Jacks is an exciting prospect, while Sam Billings and Colin Ingram will also be eager to impress in this opening game.

Oval Invincibles vs Manchester Originals Prediction

Fifty to be scored in the match - Yes - BET NOW

As the odds suggest, this should be a tight first game. Indeed, the whole tournament looks set to be keenly contested with seemingly little to choose between the eight teams, a fact reflected by the thin spread of prices in the outright market.

There's no doubting the Invincibles have a fearsome bowling attack, but the emphasis might just be on the batsmen as all eyes are trained on this new format, designed to bring new fans to cricket as the traditional six-ball over structure is dispensed within games that are designed to last about two-and-a-half hours.

With Buttler in decent nick, a big score from the established England man may just edge it the visitor's way. Expect at least a couple of the big-hitters to comfortably get past 50 on either side, as they eye what would be a headline-grabbing century.
