Australia and New Zealand will do battle in the final of the Trans-Tasman Tri-Series on Wednesday and Rob Eddy takes a look at which side might lift the trophy.

Trans-Tasman Tri-Series Final

(Wed, 06.00 GMT)

Australia breezed through to the final with a 100 per cent record and are, unsurprisingly, strong favourites to lift the trophy The Kiwis sneaked through on net run-rate after both they and England won just one match in the group stage.

The Aussies chose to select a few untried players who had shone in the recent Big Bash League and it has certainly paid off to date, with the likes of D'Arcy Short and Chris Lynn both making meaningful contributions. Add to that the experience of David Warner, Aaron Finch and Glenn Maxwell and it looks a solid and exciting Australia side that will take on Kane Williamson’s Black Caps.

England were tipped to do well after they beat the Baggy Greens 4-1 in the recent one-day series but Eoin Morgan’s men have not really been at the races and never threatened the men in green and gold, and it was New Zealand that ran them close in match five.

However, set a target of 244 to keep up their perfect record, Warner’s men broke the record for the highest successful run-chase and it is for that reason why they will surely have too much for the hosts in Auckland.

It was simply a case of whatever score you get, we will get one more and that will doubtless weigh on the mind of Williamson’s men as they attempt to get the job done in midweek.

T20 Cricket tips will focus on Australia and rightly so but, with Martin Guptill in the side, the hosts do have a chance, and the Aussie bowlers know all about him. The 31-year-old’s majestic 105 at Eden Park was a masterclass in power hitting but still not enough to get the win. Kiwi fans will hope for a repeat display but need to see better bowling from an attack that was hit to all parts by Warner, Short, Finch and Maxwell the last time these two sides met.

T20 Cricket betting on highest scorer is always popular and my tip is Finch, who seems to pull out his best for the biggest games. But it is tough to call, with all Australia’s batsmen seemingly in decent nick and ready to explode in the final. The T20 Cricket Odds have Australia as favourites and they have done nothing so far in the series to suggest they will not deliver.

The bowlers were hammered by Guptill but managed to keep a lid on England’s big-hitters and the likes of Kane Richardson and Andrew Tye have shone in the absence of Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins.

They have one more match to go and, while New Zealand cannot be ruled out in a two-horse race, it is hard to see past a rampant Aussie unit.
