Neither Australia nor South Africa reached the knockout stage of the last Twenty20 World Cup back in 2016, and both will be hoping for much more from their respective campaigns this year.

Australia v South Africa Betting Odds

Their clash in Abu Dhabi kick starts the Super 12 phase of the competition, and the Aussies are 8/11 to begin with a win while the Proteas are 11/10 to come out on top.

In terms of outright betting, punters can back Australia to lift the trophy at 15/2 while South Africa are 14/1 outsiders in the same market.

Australia v South Africa Team News

Australia captain Aaron Finch has just returned from a knee injury, while David Warner and Steve Smith are also available but have recently been short of game time. Dan Christian, Nathan Ellis and Daniel Sams have been named as the squad's injury cover.

AB de Villiers had been in talks with South Africa about coming out of retirement to feature in the tournament, but that never came to fruition, and he is not part of their squad.

Skippered by Temba Bavuma, the Proteas do have a healthy group of in-form players, including big hitter Quinton de Kock. Andile Phehlukwayo, George Linde and Lizaad Williams are the reserve players named.

Australia v South Africa Prediction

South Africa to Win - BET NOW

Australia are well-fancied by bookmakers to open with a win in Abu Dhabi, but South Africa have the makings of a dangerous team at this World Cup, and they could open with a shock victory.

Only for those who have been following the Proteas this year, it would not be that much of a surprise.

They have played more T20 cricket than any other nation in 2021 heading into this tournament, having beaten reigning champions West Indies 3-2 in the Caribbean in July before series whitewash victories over Ireland and Sri Lanka.

Primary bowlers Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje have been in fine form in the Indian Premier League and could cause plenty of problems for Australia's batsmen, who have not got a lot of game time under their belts.

Smith and Warner could still be rusty, as could returning skipper Finch and a South Africa win is an enticing first bet for this game.

Kagiso Rabada top South Africa bowler - BET NOW

Paceman Rabada could have performed better in the recent series in Sri Lanka but nonetheless remains a crucial component of this South Africa team.

Before that series, he looked sharp in the West Indies, taking seven wickets in four games against the T20 World Cup titleholders, and punters need only look at his Indian Premier League record this year to see he can fluster the world's finest batsmen in the shortest format.

Rabada took 15 wickets for Delhi Capitals in this year's franchise competition and is worth a bet to take the most scalps in the South Africa team.

Quinton de Kock to be player of the match - BET NOW

Quinton de Kock was South Africa's primary source of runs in their emphatic 3-0 series win over Sri Lanka last month and can carry that form into his side's first game at the T20 World Cup.

Opener de Kock formed a terrific partnership at the top of the order with Reeza Hendricks and was ultimately named player of the series against the Lankans with knocks of 36, 58 not out and 59 not out in Colombo.

But his excellent run of form stretches back much further than that, with the South African willow-wielder having fired an almighty 455 runs in T20 internationals in 2021. With those kind of figures behind him, he looks a great bet to be named the player of the match against the Aussies.
