Manchester City are on fire and a Premier League title is well within sight. The Cityzens moved 10 points clear of second-placed Manchester United in midweek as they cashed-in their game in hand versus Everton. Now, Pep Guardiola’s team head to London to face Arsenal for a third time this season. The teams have played in league and cup fixtures this season with Manchester City winning both by a combined 5-1 scoreline.
Arsenal are coming off of a Thursday night Europa League clash with Benfica in Athens. The game was moved due to restrictions on flights from the United Kingdom to Portugal. Bukayo Saka’s 57th-minute goal gave Arsenal a share of the spoils in a 1-1 draw. Now, Mikel Arteta’s team need to get up for a big showdown with Manchester City on Sunday.
The Gunners are 10th in the Premier League with 34 points from 24 matches. They are eight points off of the top five and can still finish in a European qualification position. However, they will need help from the teams ahead of them in the standings.
Manchester City have dominated fixtures over the last few years against Arsenal. The Cityzens have won nine of their last 10 matches in all competitions versus the Gunners. The Londoners’ only win came in last season’s FA Cup semifinal. Six of those nine wins for Manchester City over Arsenal came with a clean sheet.
Arsenal vs Manchester City Betting Odds
Guardiola’s team are atop the current Premier League form table with a perfect 18 points from 18 possible. The defence has been immense in recent weeks with a mere two goals conceded to opponents while the attack bagged 18 goals. Arsenal’s form over their last six games has been good – although not as good as Manchester City’s. The Gunners took 10 points from their last 18 on offer outscoring opponents 11-6. They won on matchday 24 against Leeds United, 4-2, to end a three-match winless streak.
Manchester City are favourite to win the match at 4/7 according to leading sportsbooks. They have the second-best points total on the road this season in the Premier League. Twenty-seven points from 36 possible have been taken by the Cityzens while posting a +16-goal difference.
Leading sportsbooks have Arsenal at odds of 11/2 to win at full-time versus Manchester City on Sunday at the Emirates. While the Gunners did win in the FA Cup semifinals against the Cityzens a season ago, they have not won a Premier League game against their northwest rival since the 2015-16 campaign.
Arsenal have taken 18 points from 36 on offer at the Emirates this season. They are +3 in goals at home and are unbeaten in six straight games at the Emirates.
Arsenal vs Manchester City Team News
The big news on Friday is that Manchester City have slashed their contract offer to Lionel Messi. The original contract would have seen Messi sign a £600 million, five-year contract worth £120m a season. They have now cut the amount to £470m over five-years for a year salary of £94m. Messi has not committed to a club and many believe he will simply re-sign with Barcelona.
Guardiola could hand a start to Sergio Aguero now that the striker is back in the matchday squad. However, with the team playing so well, Guardiola may not want to alter the side’s form. He does have two injuries to contend with this weekend. Midfielder Ilkay Gundogan could be fit for the game after recovering from a groin issue. Gundogan has been excellent this season and leads the team in goals. Defender Nathan Ake is still ruled out with an injury.
Arteta has just one injury heading into the weekend as midfielder Thomas Partey remains sidelined. It is likely Partey could miss out as the scan on his hamstring was more worrying than the original diagnoses. Other than the midfielder likely missing out again, Arteta could have a fully fit squad.
Arsenal vs Manchester City Prediction
Manchester City to win to nil @ 13/8 - BET NOW
Manchester City are a machine right now. This is a team that has played brilliantly in defence giving up just two goals in their last six league games. Guardiola finally has the defence he always wanted. It may have taken over £420m spent on defenders, but Guardiola now has a back four that is doing the job. Six of Manchester City’s last nine wins against Arsenal were wins to nil. Their Premier League match at the Etihad Stadium earlier this season finished 1-0 in favour of Manchester City.
Phil Foden to score anytime @ 2/1 - BET NOW
Phil Foden is finally being given time on the pitch and is excelling. The forward has scored six league goals and added three assists in 19 appearances. He has scored in two of his last three league matches including a goal against Everton in midweek. There is no guarantee Guardiola will play the Englishman with Borussia Monchengladbach up next week in the Champions League. However, he could stick with the hot hand.
Over 2.5 goals scored @ 31/40 - BET NOW
Manchester City are scoring for fun. They scored over 2.5 goals all themselves in their last three league games. Those goals came against the likes of Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, and Everton. Arsenal’s defence have conceded just 25 times this season, but they do not often come up against a team as in form as Manchester City. In 2019-20, Manchester City went to the Emirates and thrashed Arsenal 3-0. They did the same at the Etihad Stadium later in the season.
With Manchester City’s brilliant form, it is difficult to see anything other than a victory for the league leaders. Arsenal are coming off of a Thursday night Europa League game in Athens. The hard-fought 1-1 draw against Benfica will surely have taken a lot out of the Gunners. Expect them to fire blanks as Manchester City continue their winning form ahead of next week’s Champions League last 16 first leg versus Borussia Monchengladbach.
