The Serie A title may be done and dusted but Atalanta and Inter Milan still have something to play for on Saturday. The two sides will lock horns on the final day of the Serie A season with the winner claiming second place. Atalanta have never finished second previously and a win over Inter Milan would cap off another great season for the underdogs from Bergamo.
Antonio Conte will aim to spoil the party for Atalanta. Inter Milan are currently one point ahead of La Dea and could finish in second place before the Europa League restart. The Nerazzurri will have one eye on their Europa League match next week against Getafe. The last 16 tie was originally suspended due to Covid-19. Now, the two clubs will meet in a single leg knockout fixture to determine the quarterfinalist.
Atalanta are also awaiting their Champions League restart next week. The Bergamo club will play Paris Saint-Germain in a massive one-off quarterfinal fixture. After overcoming all odds to qualify for the knockout round, could little Atalanta achieve the unthinkable and defeat the oil-rich Parisians?
Before either team restarts their European campaign, they will meet on Saturday with second place in Serie A up for grabs.
When the teams met at the San Siro earlier this season, there was nothing to separate them. Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez opened the scoring in the fourth minute, but as Atalanta have done under coach Gian Piero Gasperini, they didn’t let things get out of hand. La Dea kept the match close and got an equaliser in the 75th minute from Robin Gosens.
Both clubs head into the final day in fine form. Atalanta are unbeaten in their last six games claiming 12 points from 18 possible. They defeated Parma in midweek 2-1 thanks to goals from Rusian Malinovsky and Alejandro Gomez. The club came back from one goal down in the second half to win. Atalanta are on the cusps of a milestone of goals. They now have scored 98 times and could make it 100 against Inter Milan.
The Nerazzurri are also coming off of a win defeating Napoli 2-0 at San Siro. Danilo D’Ambrosio and Martinez scored on either side of halftime to down the Neapolitans. The win gave Inter Milan a bit of revenge having lost the Coppa Italia semifinal to Napoli in June.
Atalata are unbeaten in four straight Serie A games against Inter Milan. Only one of those games finished as a win and it came at home last term. Can La Dea claim a big win, score a 100th goal and finish second in Serie A?
Gasperini is likely to rest Josip Ilicic with the Champions League restart around the corner. Ilicic has been outstanding this season scoring 15 goals for Atalanta. He has a knock that could be given more time to heal. The forward has missed Atalanta’s last five matches. Gasperini could field Ilicic to give him some game time ahead of the Champions League restart although it is more likely he will be rested.
Rafael Toloi will be back from suspension for the club. The defender missed the Parma match due to an accumulation of yellow cards.
Conte has three two injuries to worry about heading into the final day. Like Gasperini, Conte would have wanted to rest his stars ahead of European competition. However, finishing second will be a major coup for either club. A strong side should be put out by the coach with the aim of finishing as runners-up.
Matias Vecino and Stefano Sensi are both likely to miss the game. Looking at both sides, Inter Milan obviously have the stronger squad and could be one transfer signing away from winning Serie A next term.

Atalanta thrashed Inter Milan at home last season 4-1. La Dea are in form and have scored Serie A’s most goals, 98. They have three players with double digit goals in the league and are one of the most exciting clubs to watch in all of football right now. Gasperini is one of the most underrated coaches and going against Conte should see to master tacticians put all of their pieces on the table.
Alejandro Gomez to score anytime - BET NOW
Gomez leads Serie A with assists with 16 and continues to be the driving force to which Atalanta’s attack pushes forward. The captain is now 32 but doesn’t look like slowing down. He has scored seven goals to go along with the 16 assists. His most recent goal came in midweek against Parma to give Atalanta the win.
No team in football, right now, have had so little and achieved so much than Atalanta. They have one of Serie A’s lowest wage budgets but have achieved a top four place for a second straight season. They are also in the Champions League quarterfinals and could play the part of spoiler against mega-rich PSG. Atalanta are not a club to sleep on in the Champions League and regardless of Saturday’s outcome could overcome the Parisians.
Inter Milan are a solid side as well. After enduring a slump in midseason, in which the Scudetto got away from them, they have rebounded to finish strongly. Atalanta are unbeaten in four straight games against the Nerazzurri and the fixture is likely to end in a win or draw for La Dea. Can they shock Inter Milan for a second straight year at home? Yes, they can.
