Atletico Madrid and Chelsea will meet on Tuesday night in the Champions League last 16 first leg at the Arena Na?ional? in Bucharest. Due to restrictions on flights from the United Kingdom, the game was moved from the Wanda Metropolitano to the Romanian stadium.
Atletico Madrid are in poor form going into the game as Diego Simeone’s team are slipping in La Liga’s title race. Their previously insurmountable lead at the top of the table has been cut by city rival Real Madrid after a draw and loss in their last two games. Only three points separate Atletico Madrid from Real Madrid. Thomas Tuchel will feel confident that his side can get a result away to Atletico Madrid when the teams meet.
Chelsea are on an eight-game unbeaten streak and the seven overseen by Tuchel all ended without loss. The Blues have allowed just two goals under Tuchel’s leadership. They did nearly slip up at the weekend against Southampton. A second half Mason Mount penalty allowed Chelsea to get a point.
These teams do have recent history having met in the 2017-18 Champions League group stage. Chelsea won 2-1 away from home and drew at Stamford Bridge 1-1. A lot has changed at both clubs, but with Atletico Madrid suddenly sputtering, Chelsea could continue their unbeaten form versus the Spanish team.
Atletico Madrid vs Chelsea Betting Odds
Atletico Madrid qualified for the group stage from Group A, but had difficult at times. They drew three of their six games and at one point, were thrashed 4-0 by Bayern Munich. They had to win on matchday 6 against Red Bull Salzburg to get through. They achieved that victory 2-0.
Leading sportsbooks have Atletico Madrid at odds of 22/13 to win on Wednesday night. Although Los Colchoneros are the designated home team, they are playing away in Bucharest which makes this more of an away game than a home match. Atletico Madrid have posted a record of 20W-7D-4L in all competitions. However, last week they suffered a draw and loss versus Levante in the space of five days.
Chelsea head into the Champions League last 16 first leg at odds of 2/1. The Blues are in good form under Tuchel. The German manager has turned around the club significantly. While some may have expected Atletico Madrid to blow Lampard’s Chelsea away, Tuchel’s team will be far stronger in defence. Just two goals in seven games have been conceded under Tuchel’s leadership.
The teams’ last match in the 2017-18 Champions League group stage ended in a 1-1 draw. Both goals came in the second period. The teams are at odds of 17/8 to finish in a stalemate in Bucharest on Tuesday night.
Atletico Madrid vs Chelsea Team News
Tuchel has four players on the injury list heading into the first leg game. Centre-back Thiago Silva is still a doubt to play for Chelsea as he recovers from a thigh injury. Silva isn’t going to make the trip to Romania due to the injury but could make a return at the weekend. Kai Havertz could make the Champions League matchday squad against Atletico Madrid. He is nursing a knock which could be healed by Tuesday.
Christian Pulisic is being managed by the medical team at Stamford Bridge after tweaking his calf in training last week. He could be used against the Spanish side as his pace and creativity will be a massive help to the Chelsea cause. Tammy Abraham could also return to the side following an ankle issue.
Simeone will be without ex-Tottenham Hotspur full-back Kieran Trippier due to his ban over an alleged betting violation. He has three games left on his ban. Jose Gimenez could miss the match due to a knock. The defender did make the squad at the weekend for Atletico Madrid’s shock 2-0 defeat to Levante. Gimenez’s return was a surprise.
Winger Yannick Carasco could also be absent following a muscle injury. Meanwhile, defender Hector Herrera is out of the fixture following a positive COVID-19 test. Joao Felix and Luis Suarez are both fit for selection.
Atletico Madrid vs Chelsea Prediction
Both teams to score: YES @ 11/10 - BET NOW
Atletico Madrid are conceding goals to opponents. They are not the defensive juggernaut that is expected from a Simeone team. Atletico Madrid have conceded goals in each of their last seven games in all competitions. That includes last weekend’s 2-0 loss to Levante. Chelsea are improved in defence but did concede at the weekend and had to fight from behind to grab a 1-1 draw versus Southampton.
Timo Werner to score anytime @7/2 - BET NOW
Tuesday night’s game is the perfect time for Timo Werner to step up for Chelsea. He starred for RB Leipzig in last season’s Champions League and could do the same this week for his new team. Werner scored three goals in six Champions League group stage games and has 10 goals in 33 games in all competitions. Werner is struggling in the Premier League in the final third with an expected goal figure of 9.75 compared to a real goal figure of 5.0.
Over 2.5 goals scored @ 8/5 - BET NOW
Just one of the last seven Chelsea games finished with over 2.5 goals scored. The Blues have not scored more than 2.0 goals on their own since Tuchel took over as manager. Five of Atletico Madrid’s last seven games in all competitions finished with over 2.5 goals tallied. Yes, they are giving up goals. Simeone will attempt to circle the wagons, park the bus, and whatever other cliche for playing defensively you can come up with.
Atletico Madrid were poor against good teams in the group stage. They conceded eight times and scored once. Two of their six group stage games finished with more than 2.5 goals tallied. Chelsea conceded twice in the group stage but the competition in the group wasn’t of the highest level. Four of the Blues’ five group stage matches ended with over 2.5 goals scored. Expect a close game with goals scored at a neutral venue.
