Barcelona host Elche on Wednesday night in La Liga play. Ronald Koeman’s team capped of a miserable week on Sunday with a 1-1 draw at home to Cadiz. The Blaugrana were thrashed by Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League last 16 first leg, 4-1, and struggled to score goals once more at the weekend versus the Yellow Submarine.
Elche are in the bottom three heading into the midweek fixture. They are in the relegation zone thanks to goal difference. Los Franjiverdes could move out of the relegation zone with a win or draw. Of course, that is much easier said than done. Coach Fran Escriba’s team won at the weekend versus Eibar 1-0. It was a significant win as it ended a seven-match winless streak.
This is the second meeting of the campaign between Barcelona and Elche. The Blaugrana won their previous fixture this season, 2-0. Frankie de Jong opened the scoring in the 39th minute and Riqui Pigue added a second just one minute from time. Elche have been poor in the final third with just 20 goals scored in 22 games. It is the third lowest goals total in the league.
Barcelona are eight points back of a suddenly slipping up Atletico Madrid. Can they pull three points closer to the league leaders?
Barcelona vs Elche Betting Odds
Barcelona are heavy favourite going into the Wednesday night match according to leading sportsbooks. The Blaugrana are at odds of 1/7 to claim a victory at home to Los Franjiverdes. Despite the draw at the weekend, Barcelona are at the top of the current La Liga form table. They took 16 points from their last 18 on offer while outscoring opponents 17-5.
Elche took just five points from their last 18 on offer. They were outscored 10-6 by opponents over the course of their last six fixtures. Los Franjiverdes are major underdogs going into the game at odds of 22/1. Elche have lost their last two away matches in La Liga and only taken nine points from a total of 30 possible away from home.
Barcelona have taken the second-most home points in 2020-21. They have obtained 25 points from 36 possible at Camp Nou. Just once this season have Barcelona lost at home. However, three of their last six home games finished in draws, including last weekend’s 1-1 stalemate with Cadiz.
The Blaugrana have scored the league’s most goals in this season with 50 from 23 matches. Koeman’s side have also conceded the fourth-fewest goals in the division with 22. With Elche’s scoring problems this season, Barcelona will fancy their chances of another result.
Barcelona vs Elche Team News
The big news on Monday coming out of Barcelona was the report of all of the club’s current presidential candidates wanting to retain Lionel Messi at the end of the campaign. Manchester City announced last week that the original contract they had offered the Argentine was now off the table. A new, lower paying contract replaced it.
Clement Lenglet is under fire at the club after giving away a penalty at the weekend that allowed Cadiz to level the scoreline. Lenglet is another of the ridiculous decisions Barcelona made on contracts as they have him signed until 2026 at an annual salary of €5.7 million.
Ansu Fati is ruled out through a long-term knee injury. He will remain sidelined until April. Philippe Coutinho is still ruled out as well with a knee problem. Ronald Araujo and Sergi Roberto are also on Koeman’s injury list and doubts to make it back in time for Wednesday’s game.
Escriba has four players on his injury list heading into the midweek fixture. Diego Gonzalez Polanco is ruled out until March with a hamstring injury. Fidel and Jony Alamo are also ruled out until March with hamstring injuries of their own. Fidel is a big miss as he is co-goal scoring leader with four strikes. Gerard Barri has a knee problem and won’t return until next month.
Barcelona vs Elche Prediction
Barcelona to win to nil @ 10/11 - BET NOW
Barcelona defeated Elche 2-0 when the teams met earlier this season. With Elche struggling to score goals and Barcelona leading the lead in scoring, the Blaugrana should win this game and make amends for their poor display versus Cadiz. Barcelona have kept 12 clean sheets in all competitions this season. Surprisingly, Barcelona have kept just three clean sheets at home. Don’t be surprised if a fourth is kept on Wednesday.
Antoine Griezmann to score anytime @21/20 - BET NOW
Let us not kid ourselves, Antoine Griezmann has been another transfer flop of the Barcelona board. Still, Griezmann has the chance to score goals and be an important part of Barcelona going forward. The Frenchman has scored 12 goals in 34 matches in all competitions and added 10 assists. He hasn’t scored in his last three La Liga matches. This could be his chance to get goals.
Over 2.5 goals scored @1/3 - BET NOW
Twenty-two of Barcelona’s 33 matches this season finished with over 2.5 goals scored. Barcelona have had little issue in La Liga this season, scoring goals and getting wins. Elche have conceded 31 times in La Liga and two of those goals were to Barcelona just a few games ago. Four of Barcelona’s last five matches in La Liga finished with over 2.5 goals tallied. Three of Elche’s last six La Liga matches finished with more than 2.5 goals scored.
Barcelona are still in with a shout of the Spanish title. Atletico Madrid are slipping up and just eight points ahead of the Blaugrana going into the weekend. A win would take Barcelona closer to Los Colchoneros but the two sides won’t play until early May.
By then, Barcelona could be out of the title race or knee deep in a title fight. If they want to win the La Liga title, they must win against Elche on Wednesday night, which they should without any issues.
