The Bundesliga kicks off this weekend with a tasty first day fixture between Bayern Munich and Schalke. Schalke have not defeated Bayern Munich since the 2010-11 season. Bayern Munich are coming off of a treble winning season –Bundesliga, Champions League, German Cup – and will expect to pick up where they left off in August.
Hansi Flick could have a dynasty on his hands. However, it is possible that the champions will see player turnover before the close of the transfer window in October. Schalke finished the Bundesliga season in 12th place with a record of 9W-12D-13L. The club surprisingly kept coach David Wagner in spite of Schalke’s awful form for much of last term. Many expected Wagner to be dismissed. Schalke did not win any of their final 16 games in the Bundesliga.
Bayern Munich posted 82 points in 2019-20, which was 4.67 than their expected points total. They tallied 100 goals while conceding a league low 32. Flick’s team were ruthless in the final third. It should be remembered that Niko Kovac started the campaign with Bayern Munich last season. It wasn’t until Flick took over that Bayern Munich became the ruthless scoring team they did.
Can Schalke end a decade-long winless streak versus Bayern Munich on Friday or will the champions continue their great form versus the Blues?
Bayern Munich are favourites to win the Bundesliga once more at 1/6 odds. Schalke, on the other hand, are 500/1 to win the Bundesliga title according to leading sportsbooks. Bayern Munich registered 43 more points than the Blues in 2019-20.
Schalke scored just 38 times during the campaign which was on target for their expected goals figure of 35.93. Not only were goals hard to come by for the Blues, but the defence was nearly non-existent. They conceded 58 times. The figure was nearly on track to the expected conceded goals of 54.22.
Wagner’s team have done little in the transfer window to this point. They are working on signing a new striker but it is unlikely any player will arrive before Friday’s game. Schalke have played five preseason games posting three wins and two losses. On September 5, they played their most recent friendly claiming a 3-0 win against VFL Bochum.
Bayer Munich have had a short turnaround between winning the Champions League in late August and kicking of the new domestic season.
Bayern Munich are overhauling their squad as more long-term players head to the exit and fresh blood joins. The club are working hard to sell midfielders Javi Martinez and Thiago Alcantara. Martinez is 32 and highly paid, while Thiago is 29 and has one year left on his contract.
The club signed Leroy Sane in the offseason from Manchester City for €50 million. The club allowed Philippe Coutinho to return to Barcelona after his loan spell expired. Winger Ivan Perisic returned to Inter Milan following his loan expiring. Bayern Munich are still in the hunt for a winger to replace Perisic. They are linked to Chelsea’s Callum Hudson-Odoi. The youngster could head to Bavaria to get more playing time. Chelsea may sell to bring in funds for new players.
Flick is likely to be without Jerome Boateng. He suffered a thigh strain in the Champions League Final. Niklas Sule should take his place.
Schalke signed forward Vedad Ibisevic in the offseason after his contract ended at Hertha Berlin. Reports indicated the club are close to signing Eintracht Frankfurt striker Goncalo Pacienca. Both players should upgrade Schalke’s attack. Goalkeeper Ralf Fahrmann returned to the club following his loan to Norwich City. It should greatly improve the team’s defence.
