Champions League winners Bayern Munich head to Budapest on Thursday to face off with Europa League champions Sevilla in the UEFA Super Cup. One of the two teams can claim a significant piece of silverware to begin the European campaign.
Sevilla did not play over the weekend and had the chance to prepare for their fixture against Bayern Munich. The big news over the weekend concerning Sevilla was the pending sale of centre-back Jules Kounde. Reports on Monday morning are conflicting as some claim the deal has gone through while others state it collapsed.
Bayern Munich kicked off their league season at the weekend with a massive 8-0 win against Schalke. The Bavarians started the new season right where they left off in August in the Champions League. It was a dominant performance with summer signing Leroy Sane starring.
Hansi Flick has done wonders as Bayern Munich coach. He turned the club around last season after Niko Kovac’s sacking. He won three trophies as Bayern Munich coach and can claim his fourth this week in less than year in the job. Can Sevilla stop the Bayern Munich machine?
Bayern Munich and Sevilla played in the 2017-18 Champions League quarterfinals. The Germans claimed a 2-1 win in their first encounter in Spain and a nil-nil draw at home at the Allianz Arena. Bayern Munich’s win against Sevilla away saw both teams score in the first half before the Germans claimed the win with a second-half goal.
Sevilla’s Pablo Sarabia scored in the 32nd minute against Bayern Munich back in 2018. A Jesus Navas own goal put the Germans on term. Former Bayern Munich player Thiago Alcantara scored the winner with 22 minutes left on the clock.
Both clubs are far different in 2020-21 than they were in 2017-18. Sevilla regularly see turnover and Bayern Munich saw one long-time performer (Thiago) leave this transfer window. The history of 2018’s Champions League quarterfinals should play little part in the game on Thursday night.
Sevilla showed a strong defensive nature in the Europa League knockout stages. They will need that defensive solidity as Bayern Munich continue to score goals for fun. The UEFA Super League could go down a similar route as the Europa League final against Inter Milan. The game ended 3-2 in favour of Sevilla as they came back from an early goal down to win the game.
Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski scored a brilliant 55 goals in 46 appearances in all competitions last term. He scored against Schalke to kick off the season and began the new term just as he finished the last. Flick could have a selection dilemma. Left-back Alphonso Davies was left on the bench against Schalke due to a muscle injury. The issue should be nearly healed, making him available. Flick will decide on whether to play Davies or Lucas Hernandez, who played versus Schalke.
Flick could rotate wingers Kingsley Coman and Sane. Sane did score and create two goals at the weekend. Corentin Tolisso could slot into midfield for the departed Thiago. Leon Goretzka will also be in line for a place in the team.
Sevilla saw turnover in the transfer window yet again. The club re-signed central midfielder Ivan Rakitic from Barcelona. Although a lot has been made of the player’s return, he is now 32. There should be questions around just how much Rakitic has left in the tank and if his legs can keep up with Bayern Munich.
Full-back Sergio Reguilon is no longer with the club. He joined Tottenham after returning to Real Madrid from last season’s loan. Kounde’s transfer to Manchester City is still up in the air and veteran midfielder Ever Banega left the club for pastures new after the Europa League Final. Manager Julen Lopetegui has a monster task on his hands this week.
Both teams to score - BET NOW
Bayern Munich’s defence was brilliant in the Champions League and on matchday 1 in the Bundesliga. However, the club are going up against the masters of the Europa League. Sevilla played some difficult defensive teams in the Europa League but came through each match with goals. They should score against Bayern Munich. However, they may not be able to keep the Germans out of goal either.
Over 2.5 goals scored - BET NOW
Bayern Munich have one of the best attacks in all of football. They are a brilliant side and should find the back of the net multiple times against Sevilla. The Spanish team do not often play against attacks like Bayern Munich’s. Therefore, they should concede a goal or two. The Spaniards claimed a 3-2 win against Inter Milan in the Europa League Final. Expect this game to follow a similar route.
Robert Lewandowski to score anytime - BET NOW
Lewandowski kicked off the Bundesliga campaign with a goal and two assists versus Schalke. The Polish striker was brilliant on opening day and should continue that form against Sevilla. Lewandowski scored 55 goals in 46 appearances in all competitions last season. He scored a goal on average every 74.1 minutes in all competitions. Bayern Munich’s attack is centred around the striker and it should allow him to get on the scoresheet against Sevilla.
Sevilla are continuing to put their squad together and likely to sell off one or two more players before the transfer window closes. Sevilla did not play at on opening day of the La Liga season nor on matchday 2. The club are still recovering from the August European campaign. Once they begin their La Liga season, they will have a number of matches crammed into a short span of time. Bayern Munich played once already and that game should help the gain a win and the UEFA Super Cup this week.
Bayern Munich will continue their excellent form and claim a fourth trophy in less than a year under Flick. It should be an exciting fixture with Bayern Munich winning.
The UEFA Super Cup will be played at the Puskas Stadium in Budapest.
