The European Tour heads to Wentworth this week for theBMW PGA Championship with the world’s best golfers all converging on the Surrey course. David August has been in fine form this season and is back with his four best bets for the event…

David August's BMW  PGA Championship Tips

Francesco Molinari 1pt ew @ 25-1

Joost Luiten 1pt ew @ 45-1

Danny Willett 1pt ew @ 80-1

Darren Fichardt 1pt ew @ 150-1

WHERE: West Course, Wentworth Club, Virginia Water, Surrey.

NOTES ABOUT THE TOURNAMENT: As usual with the most prestigious non-major event on the European schedule there is a very strong field featuring nine of the world's top-30 golfers due to tee off on Thursday.

COURSE CHARACTERISTICS: The par-72 7,032yd track fits the mould as the classical tree-lined layout where the putting surfaces can be tricky to read but the main key to success is good tee-to-green play. Accuracy is more important than power. The finishing hole has been toughened up and now has a large stream snaking its way in front of the green.

The Main Men

RORY McILROY (12-1): Probably a risky thing to suggest but I think it could pay to oppose Rory this week as he has a poor record at Wentworth.

LUKE DONALD (14-1): Missed the cut last year when attempting a hat-trick of wins. Should be in the firing line again if in the same form that led to a second in the Heritage last month.

JUSTIN ROSE (14-1): Out with the washing 12 months ago but did finish second in 2012 and also in 2007. Can't be discounted with three recent returns producing figures of 8-5-4.

LEE WESTWOOD (14-1): Last four starts in this event have produced a second, ninth and 10th. A leading contender on that form and his recent spell which has seen him win in Malaysia, finish seventh in the Masters and sixth in the PLAYERS.

SERGIO GARCIA (18-1): Returned after a 13-year gap to post a 19th at Wentworth in 2013. Never in the hunt in Spain last week but was an excellent third in the PLAYERS Championship prior to that.

MARTIN KAYMER (22-1): No top-10s in this tournament so far but some solid results nevertheless. Will be one to fear if playing as well as he did to score at Sawgrass a couple of weeks ago.

HENRIK STENSON (22-1): Returns after a four-year gap and his absence is no great surprise as his record in the event is nothing special. With that in mind I would suggest be very wary of backing him this week.

FRANCESCO MOLINARI (25-1): As he's started to show a liking for Wentworth (top-10s in each of the last two seasons) and is in pretty good nick at the moment, I'm going to side with the Italian to upset the main protagonists.

MIGUEL ANGEL JIMENEZ (35-1): Landed the 2008 edition of the BMW PGA and was fourth 12 months ago. Must fancy his chances of going close again following his win in the Open de Espana on Sunday.

CHARL SCHWARTZEL (35-1): Slightly disappointing that he has missed the cut on five occasions, but also worth bearing in mind he has a top-10 and two top-25s. Rock-solid 11th in the Byron Nelson on Sunday.

JAMIE DONALDSON (40-1): Only missed the cut once since 2002 and has picked up a couple of top-10s. Been playing to a high level this year as a 14th in the Masters and second in Cadillac Championship clearly illustrate.

JOOST LUITEN (45-1): Returned to form with an excellent fourth in Spain on Sunday and so I'm going to take a chance on that inspiring him to bring to an end a run of three consecutive missed cuts at Wentworth.

ERNIE ELS (66-1): Although he has never won the BMW PGA Championship (eight top-10s), he has a phenomenal record at Wentworth, particularly when it used to host the World Match Play event.

MATTEO MANASSERO (66-1): The defending champion has been in fair form in the US, picking up an eighth in the Valspar Championship and a 12th in the Honda Classic.

DANNY WILLETT (80-1): Not bettered a fifth on his debut in 2010, but I think he could reach those heights again having posted a couple of top-10s and four top-20s this year. The 80-1 looks a little on the generous side.

DARREN FICHARDT (150-1): He did his best for this column on Sunday when finishing seventh in Spain and I'm going to stick with him. There have been major upsets in this contest in the past and I think he could cause the next one.

JULIEN QUESNE (150-1): Finished just outside the top-20 in the 2012 edition of the BMW PGA and enters the week having posted two top-10s and no missed cuts in seven appearances this year.
