Uruguay have arguably been the most disappointing team at the Copa America 2021. Yet, with an ageing squad of stars (Luis Suarez, Edinson Cavani, Diego Godin) it shouldn’t be unexpected that they are struggling for points. Thus far, Uruguay have tallied a mere one point from six available to them. On Thursday, the Sky Blues play Bolivia as they search for points and qualification to the Copa America 2021 quarterfinals.

Bolivia are rock bottom of Group A. The Bolivians are on zero points after two matches. Cesar Farias’ team lost 3-1 to Paraguay conceding an early 1-0 lead. They followed it up with a 1-0 defeat to Chile. The good news is the team can move into the top four with a victory against Uruguay.

The top four teams in each group at the Copa America 2021 qualify for the quarterfinals. It may not take much for Bolivia to leapfrog a poor Uruguay team and finish in the top four. Bolivia and Uruguay have played 43 times dating back to 1926. Uruguay have dominated the teams’ series of matches with 29 wins. Seven matches between the national teams ended in draws and seven finished as wins for Bolivia.

These teams have not played since 2017. Uruguay won the match 4-2. Manager Oscar Tabarez needs his Uruguay team to step up and get another win versus Bolivia. They have played poorly thus far and need an injection of life.

Bolivia vs Uruguay Betting Odds

Despite failing to win either of their first two matches at the Copa America 2021, Uruguay have the third-best odds behind Brazil and Argentina to win the tournament. Leading sportsbooks have Uruguay at odds of 9/1 to win the tournament. Meanwhile, Brazil are at odds of 9/4 to claim the tournament’s trophy in July.

Uruguay are heavy favourites to defeat Bolivia on Thursday. Leading sportsbooks have the Sky Blues at odds of 1/5 to win at the final whistle. Uruguay are coming off of a 1-1 draw with Chile thanks to scoring via an own goal from Arturo Vidal in the second half. The own goal cancelled out an early Chilean score from Eduardo Vargas.

Uruguay collected 55% possession and tallied 16 shots with four on target. The game also saw the return of Cavani, who played a full 90 minutes. He partnered Suarez in attack. Bolivia last played on Friday and the game was also against Chile. The Green lost 1-0 thanks to a goal from Chile’s Ben Brereton in the first half.

Bolivia kept just 38% possession but tallied 10 shots with three on target. Expect Bolivia to concede large amounts of possession to Chile. Leading sportsbooks have Bolivia at odds of 16/1 to shock Uruguay on Thursday. Group A is a difficult group and Bolivia are the whipping boys of it.

Bolivia vs Uruguay Team News

The Copa America 2021 was originally set to be played in Argentina. However, the country’s high COVID-19 cases cause it to be moved to Brazil – a country with large numbers of cases. Several teams at the Copa America have reported positive cases in their squads. Bolivia have reported positive cases since arriving and captain Marcelo Moreno is one of the players to miss time due to the virus.

Moreno missed the first game following a positive test and criticised CONMEBOL for playing the tournament this summer. The organisation attempted to quiet Moreno by suspending him for the 1-0 loss to Chile. Bolivian players Oscar Ribera and Jaume Cuellar have tested positive and missed the game against Chile. The duo may not be available for the game on Thursday.

Tabarez has watched the Sky Blues score a mere one goal while conceding twice in two games. It is no secret that Uruguay’s squad is ageing and there are no replacements for the likes of Cavania and Suarez. After gruelling club seasons, the duo is expected to lead the line and get goals. However, neither has got on the scoresheet this summer.

Uruguay’s only goal at the tournament has come from an own goal scored by Chile’s Vidal. Tabarez could shuffle the team in a bid to score more goals. However, with the histories of both Cavani and Suarez, it is unlikely he will take such a drastic step. The coach continues to play a 4-2-2 formation with both ageing stars leading the line. Flamengo’s Giorgian De Arrascaeta played as the team’s No. 10 behind the strikers versus Chile.

Bolivia vs Uruguay Prediction

Uruguay to win to nil @ 8/11 - BET NOW

Uruguay could use Bolivia as a springboard at the Copa America 2021. A win would help the Sky Blues achieve progression to the quarterfinals and eliminate Bolivia with one game left to play. Bolivia are coming off of a 1-0 loss to Chile. Uruguay could replicate the same scoreline.

Luis Suarez to score anytime @ 8/11 - BET NOW

The national team needs Luis Suarez to step up. The Atletico Madrid man is coming off of an incredible season. He led Los Rojiblancos to the La Liga title. Suarez is likely fatigued from the long season. He is now 34 and one of the old stars that Tabarez needs to rediscover their best international form. Suarez has scored 63 goals in 120 national team games.

Under 2.5 goals scored @ 11/10 - BET NOW

Thursday’s match between Bolivia and Uruguay should be a low-scoring fixture. Uruguay are coming off of a 1-1 draw with Chile. They fell 1-0 to Argentina in the fixture prior to the draw. Uruguay have played four times in 2021 with each game finish with under 2.5 goals. Two of Bolivia’s last three games finished with under 2.5 goals scored.

The match between Bolivia and Uruguay could be a bit of a bore with a low number of goals being scored. Bolivia will be eliminated from Copa America 2021 progression as Uruguay collect a first tournament win. The victory could move Uruguay as high as third in Group A.
