Will Manchester City get dumped out of the Champions League once more this week? The Cityzens have struggled to get past the quarterfinals since making the Champions League a yearly competition. The last four editions of the Champions League saw Manchester City eliminated at this stage and they have not reached the semifinals since the 2015-16 campaign.

On Wednesday night, Manchester City visit Signal Iduna Park to face Borussia Dortmund with a slender 2-1 lead. The first leg looked destined to finish 1-1 after Borussia Dortmund scored late through captain Marco Reus. However, Phil Foden scored a goal at the death despite Ilkay Gundogan looking inches offside in the build-up.

Borussia Dortmund felt further aggrieved after Jude Bellingham had a first half goal ruled out by VAR – Bellingham won the ball cleanly off of Ederson, who then kicked the Borussia Dortmund midfielder and went to ground. If there was a foul, it was actually on Ederson for kicking Bellingham and not the other way around.

The second leg is nicely poised, but Pep Guardiola could be worried following his team’s 2-1 shock loss at home to Leeds United at the weekend in the league. Despite rotating the team heavily, Manchester City played with a man-advantage for the entire second half. Borussia Dortmund, on the other hand, played a five-goal thriller with Stuttgart, winning 3-2.

Borussia Dortmund vs Manchester City Odds

Borussia Dortmund defended deep in the first leg and hit Manchester City on the break. By the time the game entered its final five minutes, Borussia Dortmund’s defence looked tired and it was that fatigue that allowed Manchester City to get the late winner. Manchester City collected 62% possession and 11 shots – five shots were on target. Borussia Dortmund tallied seven shots with three on target.

Despite the Yellow and Black winning at the weekend and going toe-to-toe with Manchester City in the first leg, they are heavy underdogs to lose to the Premier League club, according to leading sportsbooks. Borussia Dortmund are at odds of 41/10 to win at full-time in the second leg. They are at odds of 11/2 to qualify for the semifinals under interim coach Edin Terzic.

Manchester City are at odds of 7/10 to win the fixture on Wednesday night in Germany. They are at 2/15 odds to go through to the semifinals for the first time in five seasons. The teams are at odds of 33/10 to finish in a draw. Borussia Dortmund had to come from behind to defeat Stuttgart at the weekend. They were down 1-0 at halftime before Bellingham and Reus scored to put the team into the lead. After a second Stuttgart goal, Ansgar Knauff scored the winner with 10 minutes left to play. Terzic has to keep the team’s defence from being so wide open.

Guardiola will bring the likes of Ruben Dias, Kevin De Bruyne, Gundogan, and Foden back into the starting XI. All four of those key players were rested at the start versus Borussia Dortmund.

Borussia Dortmund vs Manchester City Team News

Terzic has a long list of players on the Borussia Dortmund injury list. Mats Hummels could miss the game due to a gastrointestinal issue. Reus could miss the game after suffering another injury. He suffered a hip injury and may not be fully fit to play. Youssoufa Moukoko and Dan-Axel Zagadou are both ruled out for the season. Jadon Sancho could miss the game due to a thigh injury, but is back in training. Meanwhile, Axel Witsel and Marcel Smelzer will both miss the match.

Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland will have even more pressure on his shoulders for the fixture. The forward has 10 goals and two assists in seven Champions League games this season. He set up Reus in the first leg. Each of Borussia Dortmund’s last four games in the Champions League finished with either Haaland scoring or assisting a goal. He is vital to the team’s chances of going forward.

Guardiola has two big injury issues going into the game, but has the ability to overcome those problems. Centre-back Aymeric Laporte has a groin injury and will miss the game. Striker Sergio Aguero will also miss the game after suffering another injury. Aguero has small issues that will keep him out of the game as it stands. The Argentine is set to leave the club in the offseason. Guardiola has had to learn to live without the team’s all-time leading scorer.
