Newcastle United will play for their first piece of silverware in more than 20 years on Sunday at Wembley when they take on Manchester United in the Carabao Cup Final. The Magpies’ last trip to a cup final was in 1998-99. On that warm day in May, Newcastle lost the FA Cup Final 2-0 to Manchester United.

Will history repeat itself or will Newcastle United lift their first piece of silverware under Saudi ownership?

It won’t be easy for the Magpies to pick up a win, as first-choice goalkeeper Nick Pope is ruled out following a sending-off versus Liverpool a week ago. Former Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius could step in, as Newcastle are down to their third-choice shot-stopper.

Manchester United are fresh off a Europa League last-16 playoff 2-1 win over Barcelona at Old Trafford. Erik ten Hag’s team is on a nine-match unbeaten streak in all competitions.

Sportsbooks’ best betting odds on Manchester United winning at full-time are 6/5. Newcastle United are at odds of 12/5 to win, while a draw is at the best betting odds of 23/10. Let’s explore some ideas for a bet builder for the Carabao Cup Final.

Full-time result: Manchester United to win – Bet now

singleSelection

Newcastle United have done well this season, but the wheels are coming off at the wrong time for the Magpies. Newcastle’s recent poor form saw the fall out of the top four and they are winless in three straight matches in all competitions.

Liverpool defeated Newcastle 2-0 at St James’ Park a week ago. The results have gone against manager Eddie Howe in the buildup to the cup final. Newcastle will have midfielder Bruno Guimaraes available after he served a three-match ban. His absence coincided with Newcastle’s three-match winless streak.

Manchester United could only muster a nil-nil home draw earlier this season against Newcastle. The Red Devils are in much better form now and go into the match unbeaten in nine straight games in all competitions.

Erik ten Hag has a relatively healthy team following Thursday’s Europa League win over Barcelona at home. It is difficult to imagine Newcastle’s third- or fourth-choice goalkeeper stopping the Man United attack.

Marcus Rashford to score first

singleSelection

Marcus Rashford is in fantastic form and having his best season in front of goal. The Man United striker has 24 goals in 37 matches this season.

He has been especially good in the Carabao Cup this season. Rashford has five goals in five appearances in the competition. The Man United No 10 scored or assisted a goal in every round he appeared in.

Newcastle United go into the match with plenty of nerves. This is the first cup final the team has played in over 20 years. For Man United, Sunday’s match at Wembley is just another match. The Red Devils played Barcelona in midweek at Old Trafford in front of more than 73,000 fans.

The atmosphere shouldn’t trouble Manchester United in the least. Newcastle will rely heavily on their shape and defensive structure. It will provide Manchester United with plenty of the ball. Rashford should make the breakthrough at some point, scoring the match’s first goal.

Both teams to score in the first half: NO

singleSelection

Newcastle are struggling for goals currently. They scored just two goals across their last three matches, failing to win all three fixtures.

The Magpies do not score a lot of goals under Howe. They tallied 44 goals in 30 fixtures in all competitions. With the quality in attack, Newcastle should be scoring more goals. A lack of a strong creative player in the midfield is one of the areas the club needs to address for next season.

Twenty-five of Newcastle’s 30 matches in all competitions were NO BTTS at halftime. Manchester United’s last nine matches in all competitions went into halftime with NO BTTS. In addition, the last three matches between the clubs in the league were NO BTTS at halftime.

Our betting tip is to select both teams not to score in the opening half. It could be either a tight match in the opening 45 minutes or one-sided.

Both teams to receive a card: YES

The Carabao Cup Final provides Manchester United and Newcastle United with the chance to win the first piece of silverware this season. Both teams are desperate to win a domestic trophy.

United have not won silverware since Jose Mourinho’s ill-fated time at the club. Newcastle haven’t won silverware since 1975 when they won the Texaco Cup.

Manchester United have received the second-most cards in the Premier League this season with 54 from 24 games for an average of 2.25 per game. Newcastle have been booked 43 times in 23 fixtures for an average of 1.87 cards per match.

Four cards were handed out to the teams in their Premier League match earlier this season. Three cards were given to United and one to Newcastle. The intensity of a cup final should only ratchet up the total number of cards handed out.

Referee David Coote will oversee the Carabao Cup Final. He has refereed 20 matches in all competitions this season, including two Man United matches. He averaged 2.0 yellow cards per United match. In his 20 matches this season, Coote handed out 73 yellow cards and one red card. He had an average of 3.65 yellows per game and called an average of 22.10 fouls. He had an average of 0.25 penalties given during those 20 fixtures.

Manchester United to score in both halves

You may want to stop your bet builder with four selections. You will receive great odds on the selections above. However, if you want to add to the odds, then consider one final selection, but please bet responsibly.

For our final selection, we think Man United will score in both halves. Newcastle’s nerves should be high, and they will play with a third- or fourth-choice goalkeeper. United are nine matches unbeaten and coming off a tremendous high, defeating Barcelona 2-1 at Old Trafford in the Europa League.
