Championship 2017/18: Who Is Set For The Premier League?

- 12:03, 19th March 2018
Aston Villa, Fulham and Middlesbrough are a few battling for promotion.

The international break allows some brief respite from the ferocity of the Championship promotion race, with a number of teams still harbouring Premier League ambitions.

After another thrilling weekend of action, now seems like a good time to run the rule over the hopefuls, as they all take a deep breath before the final plunge.

These are potentially famous last words but the top two look almost done and dusted with Wolves and Cardiff stretching clear but with the race for the play-offs still far from over, it is perhaps worth focussing on the Championship odds for those behind.

Fulham @ 6/4 to be Promoted - BET NOW

Not for the first time in recent seasons, third-place Fulham have been the form team since Christmas, avoiding defeat in their last 16 league outings.

They are the best of the rest in the Championship betting but were uncharacteristically sloppy at the weekend, spurning a two-goal advantage to draw 2-2 with neighbours Queens Park Rangers.

Slavisa Jokanovic's experience will now be crucial as he looks to guide his team through the closing weeks of the season and they have a decent run of fixtures. None of their remaining games come against teams pushing for the play-offs, while they close out the season with outings against relegation-threatened Sunderland and Birmingham.

The Cottagers have been banging on the door for the last couple of seasons and it if they can tailor their form, it could be Jokanovic's side who complete the promoted trio.

Aston Villa @ 2/1 to be Promoted - BET NOW

Aston Villa currently sit fourth on the same points as Fulham but with a slight disadvantage in the goal difference column. All looked to be going well for Steve Bruce's men but the international break may have come at the perfect time following defeats to QPR and Bolton.

Bruce arrived in October 2016 and appears to have done a decent job of clearing out the remaining deadwood from the Premier League era and stocking his squad with a mixture of experience, youth, and most notably, pace.

Their recent defeats came on the back of a brilliant 4-1 over Wolves and it could be a combination of overconfidence and fatigue that has caught up with the Villans. A return to the boss' former club Hull next time out and although a play-off spot is all but guaranteed, a tough run of fixtures which includes the likes of Cardiff and Derby may hinder Villa's momentum.

Middlesbrough to be Promoted at 5/1 - BET NOW

Momentum is always crucial heading into the closing weeks of the campaign and while Derby and Bristol City are amongst those dwindling, others that are hitting their straps at the perfect time.

Last season's League One play-off winners Millwall have looked particularly impressive, losing just once in 2018. However, those looking for pedigree when focusing on the Championship betting may instead take notice of Middlesbrough.

Inconsistent results saw Garry Monk sacked before Christmas and Tony Pulis has injected some much-needed pragmatism. One defeat in eight has helped Boro rise to sixth and they will be looking to lay down a marker against Wolves on Good Friday.

They then face difficult games against Sheffield United, Bristol City and Derby but their quality both on and off the field means they could make an immediate return to the top flight.
