Chile are coming off of a 1-1 draw with Copa America Group A rival Uruguay on Monday night. Eduardo Vargas once again found the back of the net for Chile to keep his blistering form going. Uruguay found the net thanks to Luis Suarez, who cancelled out Vargas’ goal. Now, Martin Lasarte’s team go up against Paraguay, a team seeking a second win of the tournament to seal progression to the quarterfinals.

The Chileans’ 1-1 draw with Uruguay allowed them to achieve progression to the quarterfinals. Chile have taken five points from nine on offer. A 1-1 draw with Argentina was followed by a 1-0 win over Bolivia. Like Uruguay, Chile’s squad is ageing and the country’s golden generation is not being followed by young capable players to take over.

Paraguay claimed a come from behind victory over Bolivia to start the tournament. They won 3-1 with all three goals coming in the final 28 minutes. Paraguay followed up the win with a 1-0 loss to Argentina. They still have two games left to play while Chile will wrap up the group stage on Friday.

The teams are fighting to finish in the top two of Group A. Finishing first or second would allow them to likely avoid Brazil and Colombia in the quarterfinals. No one wants to play Brazil currently with the form they are in.

Chile vs Paraguay Betting Odds

These teams have met 63 times dating back to the first-ever game in 1922. Since then, the series of matches between them have been rather even with both sides claiming 27 victories. Nine of the 63 matches between Chile and Paraguay ended in draws. Chile are on a poor run of form versus Paraguay as they have lost back-to-back matches. The teams last met in 2018 World Cup qualifiers with Paraguay winning both matches by a combined 5-1 scoreline.

Despite their good recent for against Chile, Paraguay are underdogs to win on Friday in the Copa America 2021. They are at odds of 13/5 according to leading sportsbooks. As it stands, Paraguay are going through to the quarterfinals with just three points from six available. They are two points ahead of fourth-place Uruguay and three points above fifth-place Bolivia. Bolivia have difficult games upcoming versus Uruguay and Argentina. It is unlikely they will get enough points to usurp Paraguay.

Chile are at odds of 29/20 to end their two-game losing streak to Paraguay with a win. A victory would take Chile to the top of Group A – although Argentina won’t play their final group stage match until four days later.

Lasarte’s team have already achieved progression to the round of eight. They are not simply playing for positioning and hoping to avoid Brazil in the next round. They will only play Brazil if they finish four as the Selecao look destined to top Group B.

Chile vs Paraguay Team News

Lasarte’s Chile squad are still without veteran forward Alexis Sanchez. The Inter Milan player is expected to miss the majority of the Copa America with an injury picked up in training. It was believed Sanchez would return for the quarterfinals, but that expected return date seems to have been pushed back.

Forward Eduardo Varga has found the back of the net twice in Chile’s three games. He is in great form and like Sanchez, can be counted on at the international level although Vargas’ club form seems to be lacking. British/Chilean national Ben Brereton should play alongside Vargas in attack. The Blackburn Rovers forward scored his first Chile goal in the victory over Bolivia as the Stoke-on-Trent born striker has become a cult hero in Chile this tournament as the country get caught up in Brereton Mania.

Arturo Vidal and Charles Aranguiz will play in midfield and provide a strong spine. Gary Medel and Guillermo Maripan will play in the heart of defence. Goalkeeper Claudio Bravo is likely start in goal once more.

Paraguay coach Eduardo Berizzo is likely to field an unchanged team. The coach should stick with the likes of Alberto Espinola, Gustavo Gomez, Junior Alonso, and Santiago Arzamendia playing across the back four.

Robert Piris Da Mota and Andres Cubas should play in the heart of midfield to protect the defence. Angel Romero, Miguel Almiron, and Alejandro Romero will be deployed in attack as Paraguay seek goals against a team that have allowed just two goals in three games.

Chile vs Paraguay Prediction

Both teams to score: YES @ 11/10 - BET NOW

Two of Chile’s three games at the Copa America 2021 finished with both teams scoring goals. They have allowed goals to the group’s stronger teams – Argentina and Uruguay – while keeping a clean sheet versus Bolivia. Paraguay are a stronger attacking team than Bolivia and could get a goal. One of Paraguay’s two games finished with both teams scoring.

Eduardo Vargas to score anytime @ 12/5 - BET NOW

Vargas is in fine form with two goals in three Copa America 2021 games. With Sanchez out of action due to injury, the team’s scoring falls onto the shoulders of Vargas. The 31-year-old has tallied 40 goals in 98 career games for Chile. Brerenton should play beside Vargas just giving the Atletico MG man plenty of space to run off of the ball.

Over 2.5 goals scored @ 6/4 - BET NOW

Chile have failed to score more than one goal in each of their three games at the Copa America. That streak could end this week as the two teams battle for second place in Group A. Paraguay have played two games compared to Chile’s three. One of those two games finished 3-1. Paraguay have some strong attacking players and could get on the scoresheet as well.

A draw may do Paraguay no good in the race for top spot in Group A. They have two games left to play and six points from the next six available could be the difference between them winning the group and finishing fourth.

Chile will be pushed by the Paraguayans, but they should end their current two-game losing streak to Berizzo’s team. Chile should find a goal to narrowly defeat Paraguay on Friday.
