The Europa League returns on Wednesday, August 5th with the second leg matches for the previous suspended last 16 ties. On Wednesday night, Denmark’s FC Copenhagen host Turkey’s Istanbul Basaksehir in the second leg needing a goal to level the aggregate scoreline. A second goal for Istanbul Basaksehir would change the complexion of the fixture with FC Copenhagen needing three goals to win the tie.
FC Copenhagen finished out the Danish Superliga campaign in late July to finish the division's convoluted Championship Round. The Lions finished the Superliga season in second place qualifying for next season’s Europa League second qualifying round. Now, they will aim to progress to the quarterfinals of this year’s edition of the tournament.
If they want to progress, however, FC Copenhagen must defeat Turkish Super Lig champions Istanbul Basaksehir. The Turkish club won their first-ever Turkish Super Lig title by edging Trabzonspor by four points. Istanbul Basaksehir do go into the game in poor form having lost two of their last three games in the Turkish Super Lig.
FC Copenhagen won their last two games of the season in the Superliga Championship Playoff Round. Now, Stale Solbakken will hope his FC Copenhagen can overcome a one-goal deficit to progress to the next round.
The first leg of the last 16 match between the two clubs took place on March 12. By the time the clubs kick off the second leg, it will be nearly five months in between fixtures. Once the quarterfinals begin, the teams will play a one-off match to get to the final due to the time constraints teams have at the moment to finish out the competition.
A single penalty separated FC Copenhagen and Istanbul Basaksehir in the first leg. Edin Visca scored an 88th-minute penalty for Istanbul Basaksehir in a closely contested fixture. The winner of the tie between FC Copenhagen and Istanbul Basaksehir will advance to play either Austria’s LAZK Linz or England’s Manchester United. As things stand after the first leg, it is likely Manchester United will advance to the last eight after thrashing LASK Linz 5-0 in the first leg.
Wednesday night’s game between the clubs will take place at FC Copenhagen’s Parken Stadion. The team that progresses will meet Manchester United five days later in Koln, Germany for the quarterfinal fixture.
Istanbul Basaksehir have been in far better form than FC Copenhagen on the domestic front to finish the season. However, travelling away to Denmark may dent their hopes of carrying on.
Solbakken should get several players back from injury for the Europa League second leg. The club will have had a week and a half between the domestic campaign ending and the beginning of the Europa League restart. Solbakken does have three players still listed as potentially missing the game through injury. Although all three could make it back in time.
Ragnar Sigurdsson, Michael Santos, and Viktor Fischer are all three suffering from injuries at the Parken Stadion. Solbakken should still have more than enough talent to choose from to get his side a big win against the Turkish champs. A win in the game may not be enough, however. An away goal will give Istanbul Basaksehir an upper hand that could be insurmountable.
Manager Okan Buruk has no new injuries at Istanbul Basaksehir. He will have a full squad to choose from for Wednesday night. Buruk must overturn the club’s form from the end of the season that saw them lose two of their last three games. Two players hit double digit goals for Istanbul Basaksehir in the Turkish Super Lig. Demba Ba and Edin Visca both scored 26 goals.
Istanbul Basaksehir to win either half - BET NOW
Istanbul Basaksehir are coming off of a Turkish Super Lig title win for the first time ever. Now, Buruk’s team turn their attention to winning the Europa League. It won’t be easy but they need to finish off FC Copenhagen in the second leg. Just like in the first leg, the Turkish club should prevail in one of the halves against FC Copenhagen.
Under 2.5 goals scored - BET NOW
Wednesday’s game should be a close, tight affair between FC Copenhagen and Istanbul Basaksehir. A penalty separated the two teams when they met in the first leg in Turkey. Four out of Istanbul Basaksehir’s last six Turkish Super Lig matches ended with under 2.5 goals scored. Three of FC Copenhagen’s last six matches in the Superliga Championship Playoff Round finished with under 2.5 goals.
Edin Visca to score anytime - BET NOW
Bosnian forward Edin Visca’s 88th-minute penalty gave Istanbul Basaksehir the win in the Europa League last 16 first leg. The 30-year-old forward has scored 19 goals in 46 games in all competitions in 2019-20. Visca had a brilliant Turkish domestic season scored 13 goals in 33 games and adding 13 further assists. The right winger scored an additional six goals in nine Europa League matches averaging a goal every 140 minutes in the competition.
Visca will be key to Istanbul Basaksehir’s performance on Wednesday. He is a star player for the club and should help them edge past FC Copenhagen. Both teams will go into the fixture with around a week and a half of rest. It should make for tired legs to be rested.
Although Istanbul Basaksehir lost two of their last three league games, they were on the verge of winning the title and can be forgiven. Their last day of the season loss came after being handed the trophy. The Turkish club should win away in the second leg and set up a match with Manchester United in the quarterfinals. That will be a tricky game for Manchester United and Istanbul Basaksehir could get the best of the Red Devils. First, they will defeat FC Copenhagen in the last 16 second leg.
