Freiburg and Werder Bremen had differing weekends in the Bundesliga during matchday 26. The former picked up a scrappy 1-1 draw versus RB Leipzig almost ending the Red Bulls’ chances of winning the Bundesliga. Freiburg nearly pulled of a dramatic stoppage-time win, but a late goal was ruled out due to being scored from an offside position. Still, coach Christian Streich’s team were excellent against RB Leipzig and will fancy their chances of getting all three points versus a struggling Werder Bremen.
The away side were thrashed 4-1 by Bayer Leverkusen on Monday night at home. Werder Bremen are second from the bottom in the Bundesliga and five points from the relegation playoff place. It is that spot in the table that will be their goal of reaching by the end of the season. If Werder Bremen can finish in 16th place, they will be able to rescue their status in the Bundesliga against the third-place finisher in the Bundesliga 2.
Freiburg are knocking on the door of the Bundesliga’s top six. The club are two points back of sixth-placed Wolfsburg in the fight for the final Europa League place. Wolfsburg have a difficult – but not impossible – game against Borussia Dortmund. A loss to the league’s second-placed team could see Freiburg leapfrog them with a victory.
Can Werder Bremen defeat Freiburg or will the home side continue their good form?
Werder Bremen are unbeaten in their last three Bundesliga games versus Freiburg. Coach Florian Kohfeldt received the backing of Werder Bremen’s board prior to Monday night’s loss to Bayer Leverkusen. It seems unlikely that the coach will get the sack, so a firefighting manager won’t be coming in to save the day. A win versus Freiburg could change everything for the green and white. Their last win at Freiburg came in 2017. Werder Bremen have a good record against Freiburg over the course of their last 10 fixtures. They have posted a 4W-4D-2L record during that timeframe.
Freiburg have record 20 points from 36 possible at home this campaign. They have scored 16 times in their 12 home matches while conceding just 14 goals. Freiburg won to nil twice in their last six home fixtures.
Werder Bremen have done decently on the road in 2019-20. They have collected 13 points from 39 possible but have not won in their last three road fixtures. Werder Bremen have conceded a whopping 29 goals on their travels. Seven of those goals conceded came in their last three away matches.
Freiburg are the favourites going into the Saturday's match with the bookies pricing Breisgau-Brasilianer up at odds of 5/4. Werder Bremen can be backed at betting odds of 11/5 for the victory in hope they can have a great escape from the drop.
Streich could be without two players for Werder Bremen’s arrival on Saturday. Lukas Kubler is recovering from a knee injury and is likely to be out until June. Meanwhile, Yoric Ravet is still healing from a muscle injury. He could be included in Streich’s team, however, the coach could leave Ravet out to continue recovering after returning from the Covid-19 break.
Kohfeldt will have midfielder Davy Klaasen back from suspension after he missed Monday night’s loss. A variety of players are suffering from injury and have differing return dates. The ageless Claudio Pizarro won’t be back for the remainder of the season as it stands due to a muscle issue. Meanwhile, Ludwig Augustinsson is likely to miss the match too through injury.
Werder Bremen have the Bundesliga's worst defence having conceded 59 times. On average, Werder Bremen concede 2.36 goals per match. At the other end, Werder Bremen have scored the Bundesliga’s second-fewest goals. Just 28 strikes have been tallied by the green and white. Just 1.12 goals per game are scored on average by Werder Bremen.
Freiburg, on the other hand, have posted a –1-goal difference in the division. Thirty-six goals have been conceded with 35 scored. Last weekend versus RB Leipzig, Steich’s team piled players behind the ball preventing the Red Bulls from fully taking their chances.

Nils Petersen to score anytime - 8/5 - BET NOW
Freiburg’s veteran striker Nils Petersen leads the team in goals with eight scored in 26 Bundesliga fixtures. He has added two assists and is the catalyst to the Freiburg attack. The striker played 68 minutes versus RB Leipzig last weekend and could get more playing time this week with further fitness gained. The last time these teams met in the Bundesliga, Petersen bagged two goals in the clubs’ 2-2 draw in Bremen.
Werder Bremen are desperate to get a win. The team have been poor this season and if they do go down – which looks likely – it will be deserved. Five points separate them from the relegation playoff place. Reach the playoff game would give Werder Bremen a bit of a reprieve.
The current 16th-place team, Fortuna Dusseldorf, have a winnable fixture versus Koln. They could increase the gap between themselves and Werder Bremen. Freiburg should get a result on Saturday versus Werder Bremen potentially damaging the green and white’s chances of survival.
