Will Genoa’s stay in Serie A finally come to an end? The Grifone go into the final day of the Serie A season just one point above 18th-placed Lecce. Genoa and Lecce will kick off simultaneously with both sides seeking a win. A victory would keep Genoa in the top flight. A loss or draw and they would need to see how Lecce’s game against Parma turns out.
Hellas Verona are ninth in Serie A and go into the final day with nothing to gain nor lose. The Gialloblu have won just once in their last six games having picked up six points from their last 18 possible. It is two points fewer than 17th-placed Genoa took in their last six matches in the league.
This is the second straight season in which Genoa have fought relegation down to the final day of the campaign. They have lost back to back league matches by a combined score of 8-0. Their midweek loss to Sassuolo by a scoreline of 5-0 was extremely embarrassing.
Hellas Verona won the reverse fixture against Genoa this season. They will fancy their chances of winning again and possibly having a hand in the relegation of one of Italy’s most historic clubs.
When these sides met at the Bentegodi earlier this season, Genoa took a first half lead through Antonio Sanabria. When the clubs returned to the pitch after the halftime break, the Grifone capitulated as Valerio Verre scored 10 minutes after the restart from the penalty spot. Mattia Zaccagni found the back of the net with 25 minutes to play to give Hellas Verona the win.
Since 2012, the clubs have met 10 times in all competitions. Genoa were unbeaten in eight of those 10 matches. Five of those eight games finished with Genoa winning. The pressure will be heavy on the Grifone’s shoulders when they clash. Hellas Verona have nothing to play for and could play the game without pressure.
Genoa have taken a mere 19 points from 54 possible at the Stadio Luigi Ferarris. They have posted a 6W-1D-11L record at home. Head coach Davide Nicola has watched his side post a –10-goal difference. Genoa have failed to score in their last 180 minutes of football.
The good news for Genoa is Hellas Verona’s poor away record. They have tallied 17 points from a possible 54. Hellas Verona have registered just 3W-8D-7L record on their travels. Hellas Verona have a –5-goal difference away from the Bentegodi.
In Serie A, unlike in the Premier League, teams' table position in the relegation fight is not determined by goal difference. Rather it is determined by head to head record – hence why in La Liga and Serie A why bottom of the table clubs do not try their hardest to beat and keep the scorelines low against the top of the table clubs.
Genoa have the upper hand over Lecce due to collecting four points against them in head to head games. This means that if Genoa lose and Lecce draw, the former would be safe from relegation. Genoa also have the better goal difference heading into matchday 38.
Nicola has just one player on the injury list. Ivan Radovanovic is out for the remainder of the season due to a sprained knee. Otherwise, Nicola has a full squad to choose from going into Sunday.
Former Genoa coach Ivan Juric takes his Gialloblu into the weekend on the back of an impressive 3-0 win over SPAL. Juric has three players fighting for fitness. Two players could still make the squad for the weekend as Claud Adjapong and Pawel Dawidowicz are possible for making the team against Genoa. Adjapong has a strained muscle while Dawidowicz has his own muscle issue. Marash Kumbulla is ruled out due to an arm injury.
Both teams to score - BET NOW
Six of the last 10 matches between Genoa and Hellas Verona in all competitions ended with both teams finding the back of the net. That includes their last two meetings in Serie A. Earlier this campaign, both clubs found the back of the net in a come from behind win for Hellas Verona. Genoa may not have scored in their last 180 minutes of football. However, they must go out to win on Sunday, so expect a goal at the very least.
Over 2.5 goals scored - BET NOW
Five of the last 10 games in all competition between Genoa and Hellas Verona have ended with over 2.5 goals scored. Their last two games in Serie A finished with over 2.5 goals scored. Five straight Genoa games in Serie A ended with over 2.5 goals. Three of Hellas Verona’s last five games ended with over 2.5 goals tallied.
Goran Pandev to score anytime - BET NOW
Thirty-seven-year-old Genoa striker Goran Pandev is the club’s leading scorer which shows just how poor the club have been in the final third. It also shows that Pandev can still cut it for a lower table team in Serie A. Pandev’s contract is up at the end of the campaign and he can cap it off by scoring his 10th goal of the term. His last goal came on matchday 32 and with Genoa needing a big win on Sunday, could find the back of the net to power the Grifone to safety.
Genoa have been in a downward spiral since sacking coach Davide Ballardini early on in the 2018-19 season. His sacking had a lot to do with the club’s president interest in selling top players and replacing them with subpar personnel.
It is difficult to believe Genoa will go down but at the same time, it is completely feasible with the way they are run from the front office. Genoa’s future could rest on Lecce’s result rather than their own. The pressure will be high on Genoa’s shoulders and Hellas Verona may benefit from it. A draw or Hellas Verona win could be on the cards for Sunday night.
