The Olympic women’s football tournament kicks off on Wednesday for Group E as Great Britain and Chile will meet in Sapporo. The two women’s footballing nations will be joined by Japan and Canada in Group E of the women’s Olympic tournament.

The women’s side of the bracket features 12 teams divided into three groups of four teams. The top two teams in each group advance to the knockout stage along with the two best third-place teams. Unlike the men at the Olympics, there is no age restriction on the female players, allowing for the best women’s players in the world to compete at the Summer Games.

According to FIFA, the England women’s football team are ranked sixth in the world. Many of the ladies from the England team will participate with the combined Great Britain team at the tournament. Nineteen of the team’s players at the Olympics are English while Sophie Ingle, Kim Little, and Caroline Weir are the only members from Wales and Scotland. Manager Hege Riise has a strong squad at her disposal for the Summer Games with the likes of Steph Houghton and Nikita Parris.

Chile are ranked No. 37 in the world, the lowest of any of the four teams in Group E. Coach Jose Letelier will hope the Chilean team can cause a few shocks at the tournament. However, with strong Canada Japan teams, it is likely to be a difficult summer in the Land of the Rising Sun for Chile.

Great Britain vs Chile Betting Odds

Chile are playing in their first women’s Olympic football tournament. The Chileans are still in their infancy as a footballing nation on the women’s side and it should show in a difficult group. Great Britain did not appear at the 2016 Summer Games in Brazil. The four nations that make up the women’s team could not work together for the tournament, so did not play. This time around, the four nations are working together and will aim to top Group E.

Group E could feature three teams making the knockout stage. It looks to be the most difficult group in the women’s football tournament. Great Britain qualified for the Tokyo Summer Games thanks to England's performance at the 2019 Women’s World Cup. They reached the semifinals in France to give Great Britain a berth in the tournament.

Great Britain go into the game on Wednesday in Sapporo at betting odds of 19/100 to win the game versus Chile. Riise’s team will face a strong Japan team on matchday 2 of Group E. A win on matchday 1 of Group E versus Chile could set Great Britain up to advance to the knockout round.

Chile are at best odds of 22/1 to shock Great Britain. The Chileans finished as runners-up at the 2018 Copa America. In 2019, Chile’s rise as a South American women’s footballing nation continued as they qualified for their first Women’s World Cup.

Great Britain vs Chile Team News

Great Britain goalkeeper Karen Bardsley was replaced by Chelsea shot-stopper Carly Telford ahead of the tournament. Manchester City goalkeeper Bardsley was forced to withdraw from the team after an injury.

As previously mentioned, the Great Britain team are predominantly made up of England internationals. Just two players come from Scotland and one from Wales. Riise has been the England interim manager since the departure of Phil Neville, who took the manager’s job at Inter Miami – a role he may now regret. Hege could select Ellen White to lead the line as the team’s out-and-out striker while Lauren Hemp and Fran Kirby support her on the wings.

Chile have had a hot and cold 2021. They have played four matches this year in the lead up to the tournament. Chile defeated Cameroon over two legs to fully qualify for the Olympic football tournament in April. Chile secured progression thanks to a 2-1 aggregate win. A 1-0 loss to Slovakia followed before a nil-nil draw with reigning Olympic gold medal winners, Germany.

The majority of Chile’s squad is made up of domestic players. However, Le Havre midfielder Francisca Lara is the team’s top player. She has 72 caps and 21 goals for the national side. Fellow midfielder, Rayo Vallecano’s Yanara Aedo, has scored 12 international goals in 71 appearances. Lara and Aedo will anchor the team’s midfield.

Under 2.5 goals scored @ 1/1 - BET NOW

Chile are the weakest team in Group E. They are likely to struggle in front of goal throughout the tournament and finish last in the group. Great Britain will fight for a top three place. They need to start strongly against Chile to position themselves for progression to the next phase of the tournament. Japan and Canada will be difficult teams for Great Britain to get wins over. A momentum building victory over Chile will help. Chile’s last three games finished with under 2.5 goals scored. They should play well enough defensively versus Great Britain, but struggle in the final third. It will allow Riise’s team to get the win and possibly top Group E after the first match.
