Hungary face off with France on Saturday in Budapest needing a win to have any hope of progressing to the knockout stage of Euro 2020. The Hungarians were good for just over 80 minutes but ultimately conceded three goals to lose to Portugal. France, on the other hand, were good enough against Germany winning 1-0. A Mats Hummels first-half own goal gave the French the victory.

Didier Deschamps will hope the side are far better against Hungary than they were versus Germany. France kept 38% possession and tallied just four shots with one on target. France are tipped as the team to win the tournament by leading sportsbooks and many football pundits. However, they will need to be far better against Hungary – and later Portugal – to achieve progression to the knockout stage. On paper, France should defeat the Hungarians and potentially seal their progression to the knockout stage.

Hungary were tipped to finish last in Group F pre-tournament. For 80 minutes of the game versus Portugal, it looked like Hungary could throw a spanner in the works for the top teams in Group F. Still, Marco Rossi’s side could play spoilers against France.

With Portugal playing Germany on the second matchday of Group F, France have the opportunity to take a major step toward winning the group. If France win the group, they will play either the third-place team from Group A, B, or C in the round of 16.

Hungary vs France Betting Odds

Hungary kept 38% possession while tallying eight shots with three on target versus Portugal. Goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi was called into action on multiple occasions in the game keeping Portugal from getting goals far earlier than the 80th minute. The defeat was Hungary’s first loss in six tries. The team are winless in their last two games suffering a pre-tournament nil-nil draw versus Ireland was followed by the 3-0 defeat to Portugal.

Leading bookies have Hungary at odds of 11/1 to win the match versus France. Hungary are at long-shot odds to win the fixture. France are on a six-match unbeaten run with each of the last five finishing in wins. All five of those victories saw France keep a clean sheet. France outscored their last five opponents 10-0.

Bookies have France at odds of 2/5 to claim a win versus Hungary at full-time. Despite France arguably have world’s best team currently, Hungary have a better all-time record against the French. Hungary have a record of 12W-3D-8L dating back to 1911. Many of Hungary’s wins came between 1911 and 1971 when the national team was far stronger.

France have won each of the last five matches against Hungary with the most recent being in 2005. France are still favourites to win the Euro 2020 tournament. They are currently at odds of 7/2 to claim the trophy.

Hungary vs France Team News

Deschamps could be without full-back Benjamin Pavard. The defender was knocked unconscious during the team’s win over Germany. UEFA has contacted the French over not following concussion protocol. The French team claim they followed the appropriate protocol in spite of UEFA’s claims. Pavard may not play the game following the head injury.

Deschamps is unlikely to make major changes to the team – except Pavard. Karim Benzema started in attack with Kylian Mbappe and Antoine Griezmann playing either side of him. Deschamps could rotate Benzema out of the starting XI with Olivier Giroud coming in for him. Kingsley Coman and Ousmane Dembele could possibly come into the team. However, Griezmann and Mbappe were both good against Germany and there is no reason to rotate the two out of the team.

Hungary stifled the Portuguese with a 3-5-2 formation. The five-man midfield slowed down Portugal. However, Gulacsi was needed to make a number of vital saves. Goalscoring is the major issue for Hungary. Adam Szalai should start in attack once more.

Without winger Dominik Szoboszlai, he didn’t make the squad due to injury, the Hungarian team are not very dangerous in attack. If Hungary are to get a positive result against France, they will need to work harder in midfielder and defence. Playing against the world’s No. 2 ranked team, it is unlikely Hungary will out work France.

Hungary vs France Prediction

France to win to nil @ 20/21 - BET NOW

France have won five straight matches to nil. Deschamps’ team are playing well, but can play even better following their 1-0 win versus Germany. Hungary have failed to score in their last two games. They drew nil-nil against Ireland and lost 3-0 to Portugal. They may stifle France for a while but should struggle to get a goal of their own. Expect France to dominate possession and bombard Gulacsi’s goal.

Kylian Mbappe to score anytime @ 5/4 - BET NOW

Kylian Mbappe had a brilliant season for Paris Saint-Germain in 2020-21. He scored 42 goals and tallied 11 assists in 47 matches in all competitions. His pace should be far too much for Hungary to contend with. Hungary’s three-man defence is just too slow to deal with the forward. Mbappe has scored 17 times in 43 matches for France.

Under 2.5 goals scored @ 1/1 - BET NOW

France found the back of the net versus Germany on Group F matchday 1 thanks to an own goal. They weren’t able to ignite against the Germans, but should do better facing off with Hungary. Yes, the Hungarians should stifle France for portions of the match. Yet, they do not have the firepower in attack and should concede goals to one of the best attacks in the world.

Four of France’s last six matches finished with under 2.5 goals scored. Hungary saw two of their last three fixtures finish with fewer than 2.5 goals tallied.

Hungary will be a speed bump for France on Saturday. The French may have struggled to get goals versus Germany, but shouldn’t have the same problem against Hungary. France’s front three should have more impact on Group F matchday 2 as they potentially achieve progression to the next round with a win.
