Inter Milan will meet Getafe on Wednesday in Gelsenkirchen as they kick off their last 16 match in the Europa League. The two clubs were unable to play their Europa League last 16 first leg game in March due to the Covid-19 outbreak in Spain and Italy. Due to the first leg being unable to be played, the two sides will now play a one-off game.
Getafe head into the last 16 game having finished eighth in La Liga. They didn’t have a good restart to the campaign and fell from being a Champions League contender to missing out on European qualification. Jose Bordalas’ team won just once in their last 11 matches in La Liga and finished the domestic campaign in awful form.
Antonio Conte will be buoyed by both Getafe’s terrible finish in La Liga and the one-off matches that will lead to the final. Inter Milan finished the domestic campaign in second place and went unbeaten in their final eight league games. The Nerazzurri won their last three games against Genoa, Napoli, and Atalanta to nil respectively.
Conte proved himself to be a strong coach in his first full season in charge of Inter Milan. He is just four wins away from delivering Inter Milan a first trophy since 2011 Coppa Italia.
Inter Milan joined the Europa League from the Champions League after failing to get past the group stage. The Nerazzurri finished third in a group behind Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund. They were three points off of progressing to the Champions League knockout stage. Their first test in the Europa League wasn’t too difficult of one. Inter Milan dispatched Bulgaria’s Ludogorets 4-1 on aggregate to stamp their ticket to the last 16.
Getafe had a great first half of the season. The Spanish side finished second behind FC Basel in their Europa League group after claiming 12 points from 18 possible. They lost twice in the group, both times to FC Basel, failing to score in both matches.
Bordalas’ team squeezed into the round 16 surprisingly knocking out Ajax in the last 32. Getafe won 2-0 at home before losing 2-1 in Amsterdam. Thanks to their away goal, Getafe advanced 3-2 on aggregate to face Inter Milan.
The winner of Wednesday match will face off against either Bayer Leverkusen or Rangers in the quarterfinals five days later. As it stands, Bayer Leverkusen have a 3-1 aggregate lead versus Rangers.
Conte has two injury issues heading into the fixture on Wednesday. The coach is likely to be without the duo of Matias Vecino and Stefano Sensi. Vecino has a knee injury and isn’t expected back until the next term. Sensi has a muscle strain but has returned to training. The Europa League game’s importance may prevent him from being fit to play.
Filip Manojlovic is Bordalas’ only injury worry currently as Getafe prepare to face their biggest game of the season. Getafe were able to get a home win versus Ajax in the previous round but much of that performance was due to the team’s form at the time. The club won just twice in their last 15 games in La Liga.
Bordalas will hope Jaime Mata and Angel can break through Inter Milan’s stubborn defence. They have combined to score 28 goals in all competitions.
Conte will rely on star striker Romelu Lukaku to score goals for the team against Getafe. Lukaku bagged 29 goals in all competitions and outside of the current top four in Spain, Getafe would not have faced such a strong centre forward. Conte has the benefit of playing a one-two forward line as striker Lautaro Martinez scored 19 goals in 49 games. The Argentine is one the wishlist of several big clubs including Barcelona and Manchester City.
Romelu Lukaku to score anytime - BET NOW
Lukaku was a brilliant signing by Inter Milan last summer. The Belgian has scored 29 goals showing his play at Manchester United in 2018-19 was an anomaly. Lukaku is the type of striker that Getafe have not played against in La Liga. He is a big bully of a forward that should take advantage of Getafe’s defence. Inter Milan won three straight Serie A games to finish the season and will be confident of moving on.
Under 2.5 goals scored - BET NOW
Inter Milan finished the Serie A campaign with three out of their last four games ending with under 2.5 goals scored. The Nerazzurri have a strong defence that conceded just 36 times in Serie A. They went away to Ludogorets in the previous round and won 2-0. Getafe scored just eight goals in the Europa League group stage. Their issues in the final third should be apparent against Inter Milan.
Inter Milan to qualify - BET NOW
Inter Milan are likely to go through against Getafe to reach the next round. Getafe were awful to finish the La Liga campaign and that form should carry over to the round of 16 in the Europa League. Inter Milan, on the other hand, finished the Serie A season strongly and do not have any downtime from the last day of the term to the game on Wednesday.
Conte’s team didn’t face a very strong opposition in the previous round, but the Europa League is more their speed in 2019-20 than the Champions League group stage was. The Nerazzurri are too strong for Getafe and should have no issue moving onto the next round to play Bayer Leverkusen or Rangers.
Inter Milan are second favourites to win the Europa League heading into this week’s fixtures. Only Manchester United have better odds to win the trophy, according to leading sportsbooks. Getafe have the sixth best odds to claim the trophy. The Spanish team should run into an Italian defensive masterclass on Wednesday with Inter Milan moving on to the quarterfinals.
