Italy breezed through Euro 2020 tournament Group A with three wins over Turkey, Switzerland, and Wales. The Azzurri outscored their opponents 7-0. Roberto Mancini’s men have looked like the most complete team at the Euro 2020 tournament thus far, but will now come up against more difficult competition going forward.

Austria are first up for the Italians on Saturday in the last 16. The Austrians won their first-ever match at the European Championship on matchday 1 against North Macedonia (3-1). The Austrians lost 2-0 to the Netherlands before defeating Ukraine 1-0 on the final matchday of Group C.

Italy are on a 30-match unbeaten streak under Mancini. He has revolutionised the team. They press like no other national team and counter-attack opponents with quick-fire bursts. Amazingly, Italy have won their last 11 matches without conceding a goal. The defence smothers teams and regardless of which players Mancini plays, the squad gets the job done.

Austria will need to accomplish something no team has done in the last 990 minutes of football against Italy and that is to score a goal. Even if Austria are able to get through Italy’s strong defence, they may not be able to outscore the Azzurri. Italy now have the second-best odds to win the Euro 2020 tournament at 6/1. They began the tournament at 8/1. Can Austria defeat the machine that is Italy?

Italy vs Austria Betting Odds

Italy and Austria first played in 1912 with the Austrians winning 3-1. Since that first-ever meeting, the teams have played 35 times with the Azzurri posting a record of 16W-8D-11L. Since 1962, the Azzurri are unbeaten in 13 straight matches against the Austrians. Over the course of those 13 fixtures, Italy recorded a record of 10W-3D-0L. The teams have not played since August 2008 with the game finishing 2-2.

Leading sportsbooks have Italy at odds of 8/15 to win at full-time versus Austria. The Italians are 30-games unbeaten with 11 straight finishing in wins to nil. Austria will have a difficult time getting goals, but must keep from getting hit on the counter-attack. Italy are at odds of 5/4 to win to nil for a 12th straight fixture.

Austria outscored their three Group C opponents 4-3. They did well against North Macedonia and Ukraine, but struggled versus the much more difficult team of the Netherlands. Italy are better than all three of those teams. The match on Saturday could resemble the Austrians’ loss to the Netherlands more than the wins against either North Macedonia or Ukraine.

Leading sportsbooks have Austria at odds of 13/2 to cause the first shock of the knockout stages of the Euro 2020 tournament. Against Ukraine, Austria posted 18 shots with four on target. Versus the Netherlands in defeat, they also posted nine shots but only one on target.

Italy vs Austria Team News

Mancini rotated the side heavily against Wales with only goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, defender Leonardo Bonucci, and midfielder Jorginho returning to the side. Mancini kept the trio in to keep continuity in the team’s spine. Italy are a complete team and working for each other – something desperately needed for a team to win the Euro 2020 tournament. Donnarumma gave way in the game to give back-up goalie Salvatore Sirigu a few minutes.

The Azzurri should be well rested for the game. Ciro Immobile should return to the team’s attack after Andrea Bellotti played versus Wales. Domenico Berardi and Lorenzo Insigne will also return to play on either side of the striker. Centre-back Giorgio Chiellini suffered a thigh injury against Switzerland. He is working hard to get fit for the knockout stage but Mancini has no reason to risk the defender against Austria. The defence has played well regardless of which players slot in.

Austria manager Franco Foda made a massive tactical change for the game against Ukraine. Rather than playing David Alaba as a centre-back as happened versus both North Macedonia and Netherlands, the Real Madrid player was slotted at left-back. It allowed him to bomb forward and to push back Ukraine dangerman Andriy Yarmolenko. Foda could play Foda at left-back once more in an attempt to slow down Berardi.

Aleksandar Dragovic and Martin Hinteregger will play in central defence if Alaba plays at full-back. Hoffenheim attacking midfielder Christoph Baumgartner scored versus Ukraine and will slot into the team’s attack once more. Marko Arnautovic returned from suspension versus Ukraine and should start again.

Italy vs Austria Prediction

Italy to win to nil @ 5/4 - BET NOW

Italy have won 11 straight games to nil. They are in great form and could post another clean sheet win versus Austria on Saturday. Austria struggled to break down the Netherlands. Italy are the best team Austria will have played to this point in the Euro 2020 tournament. Like against the Dutch, they should have difficulty getting clear shots at goal.

Ciro Immobile to score anytime @ 6/5 - BET NOW

Ciro Immobile was rested against Wales allowing Andrea Belotti to get minutes and sharpness under his belt. Immobile will now return to the starting XI to face off with Austria. The Lazio striker has scored two goals at the tournament tallying a score in each of the games played (versus Turkey and Switzerland). Immobile showed his ability to get into open spaces versus the Turks and Swiss. He will have plenty of opportunities to score against Austria.

Under 2.5 goals scored @ 4/6 - BET NOW

Wales played a strong game against Italy and were the first team to prevent the side from scoring more than one goal. Against Turkey and Switzerland, Italy scored three goals in each game respectively. Austria should keep this game low scoring, much like when they played the Dutch or Ukraine. Saturday’s match in London should be a low-scoring affair with Italy coming out on top.

The winner of this game, which should be Italy, will likely face Belgium in the quarterfinals. If Italy reach the quarterfinals with a win over Austria, it will be a massive match as one of the two favourites at the European Championship will be eliminated.
