The new League One season is nearly upon us and the teams are putting the finishing touches to their preparations. There are some big clubs in England’s third tier and we will take a look at the ones to watch with these League One tips.

League One Winner

Barnsley to win the title @ 8/1 - BET NOW

Barnsley were unable to stave off relegation from the Championship last season and dropped into League One and must be considered as one of the strongest clubs in the division. They have a new manager as 44-year-old German Daniel Stendel is in the Oakwell dug-out and they will be eyeing an immediate return to England’s second division.

The former striker coached Hannover in the Bundesliga last term and the hope is that he will bring some German grit and technical efficiency to the Tykes in their quest for promotion.

There has been little in the way of transfer activity at the Yorkshire club but still time for recruitment and it may be that Stendel is waiting to do his business in the hope of picking up a few bargains. Barnsley have been something of a yo-yo club at this level in recent seasons but they do at least know what it takes to get out of the division and back to the Championship.

Top Six Finish

Shrewsbury Town top six finish @ 7/2 - BET NOW

The Shrews came mighty close to gaining promotion last season, finishing third in the division before falling to Rotherham after extra time in the play-off final at Wembley. League One odds on a return to the top six seem generous, with former Macclesfield Town boss John Askey now in charge and George Pilkington installed as first-team coach.

They have been busy recruiting this summer, with striker Aaron Amadi-Holloway signed from Oldham and former Newcastle United winger Alex Gilliead also on board. Free agent goalkeeper Steve Arnold has penned a two-year deal and things are falling into place for the big kick-off against Bradford City on August 4.

There is a sense that they were robbed of promotion last season, having finished eight points clear of the Millers after 46 games and they will want to go one better this time around. Despite the likes of Sunderland and Charlton being in the division, there seems no reason that the New Meadow outfit should not make the play-offs once again.

To Be Relegated

Wycombe Wanderers to be relegated @ 6/4 - BET NOW

A side coming up from a lower league is always likely to be vulnerable to relegation and League One betting on the Chairboys making an immediate return to the fourth tier will be popular. Manager Gareth Ainsworth recently signed a new deal to stay in the dug-out until the summer of 2023 and the club has placed a lot of faith in the man who made more than 100 appearances for the club between 2010 and 2013.

Midfielder Curtis Thompson has been brought in on a short-term deal but there has not been too much transfer activity and it could be a long season at Adams Park. They were on a high in May but it is open to debate how they will be feeling 12 months later.
