Leeds United will host Southampton on Tuesday night in the Premier League to make up a fixture that was previously postponed. Both sides are not clear of relegation as 18th-placed Fulham have suddenly begun to play better football. The Cottagers are unbeaten in four straight games and just eight points separate them from Southampton and 10 from Leeds United.
While Tuesday night’s fixture at Elland Road is not a six-point affair, a loss for either side could be damning in the chase for Premier League survival. Leeds United go into the match on the back of two straight losses. They fell to Arsenal and Wolverhampton Wanderers in back-to-back matches.
Southampton are coming off of a 1-1 draw with Chelsea which snapped a losing run of six straight matches. Takumi Minamino’s goal was later cancelled out by a Mason Mount penalty in the second half. Despite the draw, Southampton are at the bottom of the Premier League form table with a mere one point from their last 18 on offer.
Leeds United have been much better over the course of their last six games but have suffered back-to-back defeats. Can Marcelo Bielsa side change their form with a home win versus Southampton?
Leeds vs Southampton Betting Odds
Leeds United go into the fixture on Tuesday night as the favourite to claim a win at full-time according to leading sportsbooks. The Whites are at odds of 6/5 to win against Southampton and end their two-game losing streak. The Whites took nine points from their last 18 possible scoring 10 goals while allowing nine to opponents.
Bielsa’s team have not been great at home this season. They have taken just 14 points from 33 on offer. Leeds United have posted a zero-goal difference at Elland Road with 16 goals for and 16 goals against. Southampton are on a five-game road winless streak with their last three games in a row away from St. Mary’s Stadium ending in losses. The Saints have been outscored on the road 24-14.
Since the turn of the year, manager Ralph Hasenhuttl’s team have struggled in all areas. There is hope that last weekend’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea will be a turning point. Minamino has been brilliant since arriving at St. Mary’s Stadium as he is playing a position more akin to the one Red Bull Salzburg used him in. Now, teams across Europe want to sign Minamino.
Southampton are at odds of 41/17 to win against Leeds United away from home. Leeds United have given up the Premier League’s second-most goals. They are liable to concede strikes to Southampton have conceded the league’s fifth-most goals with 40.
Leeds vs Southampton Team News
Bielsa has six players on the injury list that will remain out of action for the midweek fixture. Striker Rodrigo is a big blow for the manager as Leeds United are coming off of a loss to nil at the hands of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Meanwhile, Bielsa is also without influential midfielder Kalvin Phillips. Gaetano Berardi, Adam Forshaw, Ian Poveda-Ocampo, and Robin Koch are all four ruled out as well. The good news for Bielsa is that he recently had centre-back Diego Llorete passed fit to play.
Hasenhuttl also has six players on his injured list going into the midweek fixture. Stuart Armstrong is being assessed ahead of the match and could make the squad. Theo Walcott is ruled out with a thigh strain. Meanwhile, Ibrahima Diallo is recovering from an injury and could make the team. Kyle Walker-Peters, Michael Obafemi, and William Smallbone are all three ruled out of the fixture.
Minamino is in brilliant form for the Saints. Since moving to Southampton and starring for the team, Sevilla have been linked with signing the Japanese international in the summer. It is reported that Sevilla will offer forward Lucas Ocampos for him. However, Liverpool are unlikely to be interested in Ocampos’ services. In further Southampton news, the club have opened contract talks with goalkeeper Alex McCarthy over a new deal.
Leeds vs Southampton Prediction
Both teams to score: YES @ 8/15 - BET NOW
Based on the talent on both sides of the ball – and the number of goals both have allowed this season – it is likely that both Leeds United and Southampton will concede goals. Leeds United saw four of their last six league games end with both teams scoring goals. They have allowed the second-most goals in the league this season. Southampton’s last three league games all ended with both teams scoring goals.
Takumi Minamino to score anytime @ 10/3 - BET NOW
Minamino has been brilliant since arriving at Southampton and a move away from Liverpool in the summer is likely. The forward’s size has been part of the cause for his Liverpool exit. The other issue is Minamino’s lack of defensive work-rate. While he is excellent in the attack, it has been that defensive off the ball work that has caused him to be left out of the team. Southampton are a team in which Minamino can thrive with.
Over 2.5 goals scored @ 4/6 - BET NOW
Four of Leeds United’s last six league matches finished with over 2.5 goals scored. Southampton also saw four of their last six league matches end with more than 2.5 goals scored. Based on the way these teams allow teams to score, there could be a high number of goals scored on Tuesday night at Elland Road.
Neither side are in relegation danger and this is not a six-point affair. However, if Fulham continue to pick up points, either Leeds United or Southampton could find themselves fighting for the top-flight life in the near future. The Saints are eight points above Fulham while Leeds United are 10 points above the bottom three.
Tuesday night’s game is likely to be close with both teams finding the back of the net and over 2.5 goals scored. The team that gets the win could put the bottom three in the rearview mirror and concentrate on finishing midtable.
