Lille have six cup finals to play over the remaining weeks of the Ligue 1 season. All cliches aside, Les Dogues could take a step closer to an unlikely Ligue 1 title with a Friday night victory over Montpellier. Lille are three points ahead of Paris Saint-Germain in the standings. Paris Saint-Germain are focused on winning a first-ever Champions League Final after qualifying for the semifinals on Tuesday night. With their focus on European competition, they could slip up once more in the Ligue 1 title race.

Montpellier are eighth in the table and on a six-game unbeaten run in Ligue 1. La Paillade posted five draws and a win in their last six matches. They are six points off of fifth-place Lens in the race for the final Europa League spot in Ligue 1. While Michel Der Zakarian’s team have struggled to put together wins over the course of their last six matches, La Paillade have collected points.

The reverse fixture between Lille and Montpellier saw the former claim a thrilling 3-2 win. Timothy Weah opened the scoring for Lille but Montpellier’s Gaetan Laborde equalised just before the 60-minute mark. The teams then traded goals as Jonathan Ikone tallied a penalty for Lille and Andy Delorte scored for Montpellier. With four minutes left on the clock, Burak Yilmaz scored the winner for Les Dogues.

Lille are unbeaten in five straight matches against Montpellier in Ligue 1. Three of those five fixtures ended in wins for Christophe Galtier’s team. Can they keep their table topping form going on Friday?

The Ligue 1 race isn’t just about Lille and Paris Saint-Germain, however. Going into matchday 33, Ligue 1 is a four-horse race. Monaco and Lyon are also fighting for the title. Monaco are four points behind Lille while Lyon are five points back.

Lille vs Montpellier Team News

Galtier is without the team’s co-leading scorer, Jonathan David. The Canadian international has 10 goals in 31 appearances. Yilmaz has 10 goals as well. David could miss the rest of the season after suffering ankle ligament damage against Paris Saint-Germain on matchday 31. After scoring against Paris Saint-Germain, the striker suffered the injury. Unfortunately for Galtier, David had come into form in mid-January and was playing excellent football following his move from Gent last summer.

Attacking midfielder Yusuf Yazici is a doubt following a positive COVID-19 test. He may not be cleared to play due to fitness for the game this weekend. Defender Jeremy Pied could return to the Lille XI after recovering from an ankle injury.

Der Zakarian has just one player on the Montpellier injury list going into the game this weekend. Defender Ambroise Oyongo is ruled out for the remainder of the campaign following an ACL injury. Montpellier forward Laborde and Delort have been brilliant this season with a combined 23.

The duo has also combined for 15 assists. They have combined for 38 goals by scoring or setting them up. Montpellier have tallied just 14 goals not scored or created by Laborde or Delort. Montpellier’s defence has been a major issue this term conceding 53 times. It is the fifth-most conceded in Ligue 1.
