The last time Liverpool and AC Milan met in the Champions League, the two titans of world football played in the 2006-07 tournament final in Athens. AC Milan got revenge against the Merseyside Reds on that occasion with a 2-1 win to lift their seventh and most recent Champions League/European Trophy.

Liverpool vs AC Milan Match Preview

Since then, the Champions League has mostly been a tournament AC Milan have been unable to qualify for. This season, the Rossoneri are back and first up is a trip to Anfield on Wednesday night. Liverpool have appeared in two Champions League Finals since losing to AC Milan in the showpiece of the tournament in 2006-07 – winning one and losing the other.

Both clubs have started the domestic season well. Liverpool are unbeaten in four straight Premier League games, winning three and drawing once to be joint top of the league. AC Milan are also unbeaten having won three straight matches to kick off Serie A. They too are joint top of their domestic league.

Wednesday’s game will be a test of Stefano Pioli’s team. Can AC Milan go to Anfield and compete at a high level with Liverpool and their heavy metal football?

Liverpool vs AC Milan Betting Odds

Liverpool’s only blemish in the league came at Anfield against Chelsea in a 1-1 draw. The Reds conceded a headed goal from a corner. After four games, it is the only goal the team has allowed. Joel Matip and Virgil van Dijk are back at their best, which led Liverpool to the 2019 Champions League Final win and the 2019-20 Premier League title.

The only problem Liverpool have had this season came in the form of an injury to 18-year-old superstar in the making Harvey Elliott. The midfielder suffered a dislocated ankle thanks to a dangerous tackle last weekend against Leeds United. He will now undergo surgery to repair the ankle and could miss the rest of the season.

Liverpool are at the best betting odds of 13/25 to win at full-time versus AC Milan. The Rossoneri, on the other hand, have the best betting odds of 5/1 to win at Anfield. AC Milan have outscored opponents 7-1 this season in three matches. At the weekend, the Rossoneri defeated Lazio at home 2-0 to keep their 100% Serie A record.

Pioli’s team does not have much Champions League experience. AC Milan have not played in the competition since 2013-14. Since then, they have only played in the Europa League, if at all in Europe.

Liverpool vs AC Milan Team News

Harvey Elliott is now out of the foreseeable future due to the dislocated ankle suffered against Leeds United on Sunday. Along with Elliott, Roberto Firmino is on the sidelines with a hamstring injury. Diogo Jota should start in attack once more along with Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah. Mane and Salah scored at the weekend versus Leeds United.

Takumi Minamino is a doubt due to a thigh strain. Meanwhile, Neco Williams is nearing a return from a foot injury. He is a doubt for the match as well. One of the big questions is: can AC Milan’s defence deal with the pace Liverpool front three offer?

Two players are on Pioli’s injury list at AC Milan. Midfielder Tiemoue Bakayako is ruled out until October with an ankle injury. Midfielder Rede Krunic has a muscle injury and is a doubt to play. Pioli is likely to start striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic in attack. The striker returned from injury at the weekend versus Lazio and scored.

Pioli could start Olivier Giroud or Ante Rebic in attack. He has options for the centre forward position. The coach plays with a 4-2-3-1 formation and will need the midfield anchors of Franck Kessie and Sandro Tonali to be at their best.

The Reds have won to nil in three of four Premier League games this season and our betting tips prediction is for Liverpool to win to nil on Wednesday.

Mohamed Salah to score anytime @ 20/23 - BET NOW

Salah could terrorise the AC Milan defence with his pace. Add in the pace and dynamism of Mane and Jota, and the AC Milan defence could be under threat early and often. It is funny to think that a majority of the football media believed Salah would be a one season wonder. He scored his 100th Premier League goal at the weekend against Leeds and has three goals and two assists in four games. Our betting tips prediction is for Salah to score anytime.

Under 2.5 goals scored @ 11/8 - BET NOW

AC Milan’s defence has been solid this season. It will get its first real test of the new campaign on Wednesday night. Two of Liverpool’s four games this season have finished with under 2.5 goals and AC Milan have seen two of their three Serie A matches end with fewer than 2.5 goals.

Our betting tips prediction is for a low scoring Liverpool win to nil at home. AC Milan should find a return to the Champions League to be difficult on Merseyside.
