Liverpool host Aston Villa on Saturday at Anfield in a must-win game to improve hopes of qualifying for the Champions League next season. Jurgen Klopp’s team are coming off of a disappointing Champions League quarterfinal first leg loss to Real Madrid. The Reds were outplayed for much of the 90 minutes, falling 3-1 to the Spanish champions.

Despite the loss in the Champions League, Liverpool are on a two-game winning streak in the Premier League. They claimed back-to-back wins to nil over Wolverhampton Wanderers away and Arsenal away, outscoring their opponents 4-0.

Aston Villa are fresh off of a 3-1 win over Fulham at Villa Park. The victory ended a four-game winless run for Dean Smith’s team. Smith was still without talisman Jack Grealish for the game, but got two goals from Trezeguet and one from Ollie Watkins.

You may remember Aston Villa thrashing Liverpool earlier this season at Villa Park 7-2. It was during Aston Villa’s relentless scoring that made everyone realise there was/is something wrong with Liverpool. Watkins scored a hat-trick in the fixture while Grealish bagged two goals. Aston Villa were up 4-1 at halftime during the game. Will the Villains claim another league win over Liverpool this weekend?

Liverpool vs Aston Villa Betting Odds

Despite being well out of the title race, Liverpool have everything left to play for. Their only hope of silverware this season is in the Champions League. They will play the return leg of the Champions League quarterfinal on Wednesday night at Anfield against Real Madrid needing at least two goals without reply to go through.

Liverpool are just three points off of fourth-place West Ham and two off of fifth-place Chelsea. They could return to the European qualification places with a win and results going their way this weekend. Leading sportsbooks have the Reds as favourites to win at Anfield – a stadium where they have lost six straight games in the Premier League! Liverpool are at odds of 8/15 to win the game at the end of full-time versus Aston Villa.

The Villains go into the game at the odds of 6/1 to defeat Liverpool. Aston Villa took eight points from the last 18 on offer in the league. They scored a mere five goals with three of those coming against Fulham last weekend.

Liverpool and Aston Villa have not seen a game between them finish in a draw since the 2013-14 season. They are at odds of 7/2 to finish in a stalemate at Anfield. Games have been high scoring between the two teams with seven of the last eight matches in all competitions ending with over 2.5 goals scored.

Liverpool vs Aston Villa Team News

There is hope Grealish will be available for the game this weekend. It was expected that the captain would return against Fulham. He has not played since February 13. Grealish has six goals and 12 assists in 22 games for the Villains. Against Liverpool earlier this season, he bagged two goals and three assists. He has missed seven straight games due to injury.

The club are being cautious with Grealish after discomfort was felt by the player ahead of the match versus Fulham. With speculation growing that Aston Villa will sell him in the summer, they are unlikely to risk a player that could bring in more than £50 million in transfer money.

Klopp is still without the usual suspects of captain Jordan Henderson, Virgil van Dijk. Joe Gomez, Caoimhin Kelleher, and Joel Matip. All five are suffering from long-term injuries. The Reds desperately missed Henderson’s leadership against Real Madrid as the side continually made stupid defensive mistakes.

The manager shocked onlookers by starting Naby Keita over Thiago Alcantara against Real Madrid. Keita was taken off after just 42 minutes due to “tactical reasons”. Speculation on Wednesday is that Liverpool will sell Keita in the offseason and re-build the midfield. Leicester City are apparently interested in signing Keita away from Liverpool for £30m. Liverpool’s defence was a shamble against Real Madrid, but should be better in the league versus Aston Villa.

Liverpool vs Aston Villa Prediction

Both teams to score: YES @ 8/11 - BET NOW

Will we see another high-scoring game between Liverpool and Aston Villa? There is a good chance of that after the Reds’ defence was hit for three goals by Real Madrid. Five of the last eight games between the teams in all competitions finished with both teams scoring goals. They have met twice this season already in league and cup matches with both games seeing the teams get on the scoresheet.

Mohamed Salah to score anytime @ 7/10 - BET NOW

While Liverpool are struggling as a whole, Mohamed Salah continues to get goals. He is doing little else for the Reds and goes missing in most matches for large periods. He scored last weekend in the Reds 3-0 win over Arsenal and again against Real Madrid in the Champions League. It was a slightly fortunate goal as Liverpool created little, but that has been the issue all season for Klopp.

Over 2.5 goals scored @ 16/25 - BET NOW

Seven of the last eight games in all competitions between Liverpool and Aston Villa finished with over 2.5 goals scored. There are goals in these teams and we could see both get on the scoresheet this weekend.

Aston Villa could have Grealish back in the team. If the captain is available, it will be a massive boost to the side’s chances of creating goals and scoring them. He had three assists against Liverpool earlier this season. Of course, Grealish may not be 100% match fit for the game. Smith will still want him on the pitch.

Liverpool’s last two games in all competitions saw over 2.5 goals scored. The games saw the best and worst of the current Liverpool team – winning 3-0 against Arsenal and losing 3-1 versus Real Madrid. Liverpool must win this fixture to have hopes of catching West Ham and Chelsea. There are just 24 points left in the season.
