Liverpool thrashed Serie A’s Atalanta on matchday 3 in the Champions League, 5-0 in Bergamo. It seems that every time Liverpool are claimed to be in an injury crisis and up against a difficult opponent, they come through with a victory. It happened again on Sunday night as Liverpool, without the likes of Jordan Henderson, Mohamed Salah, and Virgil van Dijk, easily set aside Premier League title hopefuls Leicester City. The Reds won convincingly, 3-0, and were rarely troubled.
The win versus Leicester City sent Liverpool back to the top of the table, although they are behind Tottenham Hotspur on goal difference. Now, Jurgen Klopp takes his team up against Atalanta again on matchday 4 in the Champions League at Anfield.
Liverpool are already assured of a place in the Europa League last-32 at the very least. They are a perfect nine from nine in the group. A win against Atalanta would seal Liverpool’s progression to the last-16 of the competition with two matchdays to go.
Atalanta are in second-place in the group on four points alongside Ajax. La Dea will be out for revenge after losing in humbling fashion to the reigning Premier League winners. Liverpool’s matchday 3 result was a shock as they put five goals past Atalanta. Can they do it again on home soil?
Liverpool vs Atalanta Betting Odds
Liverpool head into matchday 4 as favourites according to leading sportsbook. The Reds are 4/6 to win at full-time on Wednesday night at Anfield. Atalanta are 19/5 to pull off a shock result on Merseyside at full-time. Gian Piero Gasperini’s team are not in great form heading into the big game in England. After losing 5-0 to Liverpool, Atalanta drew their proceeding two fixtures to Inter Milan (1-1) and Spezia (nil-nil).
The free-scoring Italians have suddenly hit a wall, scoring just once in the last 270 minutes of football in all competitions. Liverpool have not had that issue. They are unbeaten in eight straight games in all competitions. Their only loss this season came at the hands of Aston Villa away from home in a bizarre game. Liverpool lost 7-2.
Remarkably, Liverpool’s defence has been better since Virgil van Dijk went down with a season-ending knee injury. Liverpool have kept four clean sheets in their last eight games. Two of those game in the Reds last three games in all competitions and included wins versus Atalanta in the Champions League and Leicester City at the weekend on the domestic front.
Liverpool vs Atalanta Team News
Van Dijk and fellow centre-back Joe Gomez are both out of action for the Reds. The former is done for the season after a Grade 3 ACL tear. Gomez could return in the late spring after having an operation on a knee tendon. In spite of shallow depth at centre-back, Joel Matip returned recently and has played well. He partnered with Fabinho (also just back from injury) to keep a clean sheet versus Leicester City on Sunday.
Klopp could rotate his depleted central defenders, giving Rhys Williams another start this week in the Champions League. The youngster has been impressive filling in for injured teammates. Jordan Henderson could miss out once more. He suffered a muscle strain during the international break as did Xherdan Shaqiri. Mohamed Salah initially tested positive for COVID-19 but has now returned a negative test. He is likely to be used against Atalanta.
Klopp could bring in Divock Origi or Takumi Minamino against Atalanta to rest players before a busy part of the campaign. Trent Alexander-Arnold is likely to miss once more through injury. Neco Williams may start rather than James Milner. The latter started versus Leicester City and played well at the weekend.
Gasperini will be without Fabio Depaoli due to a muscle injury. Ruslan Malinovsky is out of action after testing positive for COVID-19. Mattia Caldera is closing in on a return but Wednesday night’s game may come too soon.
Liverpool vs Atalanta Prediction
Say what you want about Liverpool’s defence with Van Dijk anchoring it, but the one truth is that Liverpool rely too heavily on the Dutchman. With Van Dijk out of action, Liverpool must be more aware of themselves at the back and play tighter defence. Since Van Dijk went down with injury, Liverpool’s backline has been improved. Liverpool conceded 11 times in the league before Van Dijk’s injury. Since then, just three league goals have been allowed and four clean sheets in all competitions kept.
Summer signing Diogo Jota is undroppable. He scored once more at the weekend versus Leicester City, pushing his goal tally to eight in 12 appearances – four in the Premier League and four in the Champions League. There is every chance Klopp could rest Jota, but he scored a hat-trick versus Atalanta in Bergamo and is Liverpool’s most in-form attacker.
Liverpool went to Bergamo and trashed Atalanta 5-0 on matchday 3 in the Champions League. The team’s attack ran riot and shocked many onlookers. Atalanta should be better this week, but they are a team that is often open at the back. Gasperini’s side are not in form as two league draws have been obtained following the loss to Liverpool.
Nine of Liverpool’s 14 games in all competitions finished with over 2.5 goals scored. That includes Sunday’s 3-0 win at home versus Leicester City. Two of Liverpool’s three games in the Champions League group stage finished with over 2.5 goals scored and the team average 2.57 goals tallied per game in all competitions.
Nine of Atalanta’s 11 games in all competitions finished with over 2.5 goals scored. It wasn’t until matchday 10 that Atalanta finally finished a game with under 2.5 goals scored. They can score goals but will concede them just the same.
Liverpool’s performance on matchday 3 may not be completely replicated, but they should do something very similar. Expect a Liverpool win as they hold Atalanta in check once more.
