RB Leipzig had their Bundesliga title hopes all but dashed last weekend thanks to 1-1 draw versus Freiburg at home. The Red Bulls should have won the fixture having outshot Freiburg 19-4. However, the away side played remarkably strong defence as RB Leipzig continually shot wide – or had their shots saved by an inspired Alexander Schwolow. Now, Julian Nagelsmann’s team must dust themselves off and get maximum points versus Mainz away to have any hope of pulling closer to league leaders Bayern Munich.
Mainz head into the weekend after a great come from behind draw versus Koln away. Trailing 2-0 after 60 minutes, Mainz mounted an inspired comeback with goals from Taiwo Awoniyi and Pierre Kunde. The point was much needed and keeps Mainz four points above the relegation playoff place currently occupied by Fortuna Dusseldorf.
Although sitting 15th in the league, Mainz are in decent form having collected five points from their last nine possible. The last time Mainz played RB Leipzig; they were humiliated. The Red Bulls put eight goals past a hapless Mainz cruising to an 8-0 victory. RB Leipzig’s in-demand striker Timo Werner scored a hat-trick versus Mainz. He will hope to get on the scoresheet again and end his current goals drought in the Bundesliga.
Mainz head into matchday 27 unbeaten in three straight home fixtures. Five points were collected in those nine games raising confidence that moving away from the bottom three is a possibility. Mainz’s problem at home has been a lack of goalscoring. They have tallied the fourth-fewest goals at home with just 15 from 13 games. Meanwhile, Achim Beierlorzer’s team have allowed 21 goals against. It isn’t a massive number but any time a team’s goal difference is negative the season will be a struggle.
RB Leipzig have the joint-best away points total in the division with 25. They are on a three-match unbeaten run away from the Red Bull Arena with seven points from nine taken. Nagelsmann’s team have been free-scoring away from home with 30 goals tallied, which is the second-best mark in the Bundesliga. They have also conceded the second-fewest goals away from home with just 13 allowed.
Nagelsmann’s team were unstoppable the last time the two clubs met with an 8-0 win. With RB Leipzig struggling to breakdown Freiburg on matchday 26, they could once again find it difficult to get a goal and win convincingly.
Mainz might be at home, but they are found at odds of 11/2. RB Leipzig are looking to bounce back after last weekend's draw and can be found at odds of 12/25.
Mainz head into the weekend with just one injury issue. Goalkeeper Robin Zentner will miss the fixture due to a knee injury. The 25-year-old is most famous for his “air kick” own goal from 2017 when he took his eye off of a back pass missing the clearance kick resulting in the ball going into the back of the net. Other than Zentner’s absence, Mainz should be at full-strength going into the weekend.
Nagelsmann has got several players back to full fitness over the last few weeks and goes into matchday 27 with just a couple of doubts. Ethan Ampadu, on loan from Chelsea, is still recovering from a back issue but could be fit enough to make the matchday squad. Meanwhile, Emile Forsberg is recovering from tonsillitis and could make the squad for the trip to Mainz.
Werner has been in a goalscoring slump for since matchday 18. He has scored just once in his last eight games. Only twice in those eight Bundesliga games did RB Leipzig tally a win. His lack of goals has led to the Red Bulls falling off the pace in the race for the Bundesliga title. RB Leipzig are seven points back of Bayern Munich heading into the weekend.
Yussuf Poulsen to score anytime - 9/5 - BET NOW
With Werner struggling, the weight of the attacking could fall onto the shoulders of veteran striker Yussuf Poulsen. It was Poulsen’s thunderous header versus Freiburg that gave RB Leipzig a share of the spoils on matchday 26. Had Poulsen had his shooting boots on, he may have had a hat-trick. Compared to Werner, Poulsen looked far livelier versus Freiburg. Can he make it two goals in two weeks?
RB Leipzig to win both halves - 13/5 - BET NOW
RB Leipzig thrashed Mainz the last time they met 8-0. Goals were scored on either side of halftime as the Red Bulls ran riot. Although it is unlikely the game will end with such a lopsided scoreline for a second straight game, RB Leipzig should get by Mainz thanks to their superior squad talent. If RB Leipzig want to get closer to Bayern Munich – who has difficult fixtures upcoming – they have to win on Sunday.
RB Leipzig to win to nil - 15/8 - BET NOW
Mainz were embarrassed 8-0 last time out by RB Leipzig and with goals at a premium in home fixtures, could struggle once more to find the back of the net. RB Leipzig’s win to nil was their first versus Mainz in seven all-time meetings. The win showed the power of RB Leipzig’s attack and the weaknesses of Mainz’s offence.
RB Leipzig could starve Mainz of the ball as they average 54% possession per game and 16.5 shots. The home side will be up against the wall but they do have the fortune of playing before Fortuna Dusseldorf. Mainz can set the pace and pile on pressure with a win or draw against the Red Bulls.
Matches between the two clubs can be chippy. Their last six meetings saw 29 yellow cards and two red cards combined handed out. That is an average of 4.8 yellow cards per fixture.
Both teams desperately need to win. RB Leipzig need all three points to stay close to Bayern Munich while Mainz need to get away from the bottom three. The away team should be the more fortune of the two as RB Leipzig claim a big win away to an improving Mainz side.
