- Man Utd v West Brom (To Win to Nil - Man Utd)
- Man Utd v West Brom (Anytime Goalscorer - Fernandes, B)
Manchester United have been inconsistent in the early stages of the Premier League, losing three of seven games. The good news is they are just eight points off of league leaders Leicester City heading into matchday 9. The bad news is that gap may be a difficult one to close.
The Red Devils welcome 18th-place West Brom to Old Trafford on Saturday. The Baggies have obtained three points from 24 possible. Slaven Bilic remains in charge of West Brom as the club decided not to change managers during the international break. It would have given them extra time to bring in a new manager to oversee the side.
According to leading sportsbooks, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer remains the top managerial candidate to be sacked next. Leading sportsbooks have him at 17/10 to get fired. Bilic is second in odds at 13/5. Will Saturday’s game at Old Trafford be the final straw for one of these two teams? It is doubtful that a poor result will end with Solskjaer being dismissed as Manchester United renew their Champions League campaign next week.
These teams haven’t played since the 2017-18 season, when West Brom were relegated to the EFL Championship. Their last game against the Red Devils was a victory and it came at Old Trafford.
Man Utd vs West Brom Betting Odds
Seven points separate the two teams in the Premier League table. This season’s Premier League is notable for having some very bad teams at the bottom of the table. West Brom are one of three teams to fail to win any of their opening eight games. All three points have come from draws.
The Baggies are on a two-game losing streak thanks to losses to Fulham and Tottenham Hotspur. In both games, West Brom failed to score a goal. Bilic’s side have been outscored 17-6 in eight games. They do have Premier League quality strikers in the team and are paying for not signing players proven in the division in the offseason.
Manchester United won 3-1 at Goodison Park before the international break. The victory ended a two-game winless run. Manchester United are –2 in goal difference having conceded 14 times and scoring 12 themselves. A win would take Manchester United into the middle of the Premier League table depending on results elsewhere.
Shockingly, Manchester United have the second-worst home points total in the league going into matchday 9. They have taken one point from 12 possible. That point came in a nil-nil draw versus Chelsea. They have been outscored 10-2 at Old Trafford.
Man Utd vs West Brom Team News
Manchester United have mounting injuries going into the game on Saturday. Defenders Phil Jones and Luke Shaw are both ruled out of the game. Jones has been injured all season long. Shaw recently sustained a thigh strain and will miss games until mid-December.
Defender Eric Bailly is also ruled out of the fixture through injury. Meanwhile, a host of other players could miss the game if they do not recover in time from their respective injury issues. Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood are two of those players fighting injury. Greenwood seems to be the furthest from being fit due to feeling “unwell”. Last week, rumours were rife on the Internet that Greenwood had actually been involved in some serious acquisitions and that is actually why he isn’t available.
Alex Telles was initially ruled out after a positive COVID-19 test was reported. However, Telles’ subsequent test revealed him to be negative for the virus. Anthony Martial could feature after recovering from injury as well.
Bilic is without the likes of Sam Field, Hal Robson-Kanu, Matheus Pereira, and Branislav Ivanovic for Saturday. Callum Robins could be passed fit to play in time for the trip to Old Trafford.
Man Utd vs West Brom Prediction
Manchester United’s defence has been good at times this season. Yet, just like the team overall, it has been inconsistent. The Red Devils have kept four clean sheets in all competitions this season. Meanwhile, West Brom were held scoreless in their last two league matches, losing to Fulham and Tottenham. The Baggies have scored three goals on the road in four games.
Bruno Fernandes has six goals in 11 games in all competitions. Five of those goals have been tallied in seven league matches. He scored twice versus Everton prior to the international break and goes into the game in good form in the Premier League. Just like last season, if the Red Devils didn’t have Fernandes, they would be sunk. Two of his five goals in the league have come from the penalty spot.
Can Manchester United win for the first time this season at Old Trafford? They are playing an EFL Championship quality team that are on their way back to the second division as it stands. West Brom are not a good team by any stretch of the imagination. The Red Devil should put together a victory against West Brom at home, ending their four-match winless streak in the league at Old Trafford. But will Manchester United score over 2.5 goals?
Four of Manchester United’s last six games in the Premier League ended with over 2.5 goals scored. On matchday 8, they tallied 3.0 goals against Everton in a 3-1 win away. Since playing Chelsea at home and drawing 3-3, West Brom have played five straight games ending with under 2.5 goals scored. They have kept the scoreline of their games low in recent weeks. Coming off of the international break, expect that to change as a recharged Manchester United get goals in a one-sided match.
Manchester United may struggle against better team, but expect a lopsided win on Saturday. West Brom are doomed to a second straight loss, keeping them in the bottom three.
