Manchester United host Atalanta in Champions League Group F on Wedneday evening at Old Trafford. Atalanta are unbeaten in the Champions League and go into matchday 3 with four points from six possible. La Dea are under the management of Gian Piero Gasperini, a coach that was at one time linked to Manchester United as Sir Alex Ferguson’s possible replacement.

Manchester United vs Atalanta Match Preview

Speaking of Manchester United managers, their current coach, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, is experiencing a crisis at Old Trafford. Manchester United have won just two of their last seven games with three matches ending in losses. The Red Devils are coming off of a 4-2 loss away to Leicester City at the weekend and the pressure is mounting on Solskjaer.

Despite the pressure building and the unrealistic expectations from fans, it is difficult pin down top candidates for the job if Solskjaer is sacked. A loss to Atalanta at home could edge Solskjaer closer to the exit especially with Premier League title contenders Liverpool up next in the league.

Manchester United are coming off of a late win against Villarreal in the Champions League. After going a goal down in the second half, the Red Devils came back to win as Cristiano Ronaldo saved the side in the 90th minute. Will they need Ronaldo’s heroics once more?

Manchester United vs Atalanta Betting Odds

Manchester United are favourites to win at home against Atalanta on Wednesday night despite their poor run of form. Bookies make Manchester United to win at full-time at best price odds of 3/4. Despite this, Manchester United’s home form has been poor. They have posted a record of 3W-1D-2L at Old Trafford in 2021-22.

The Red Devils have failed to keep a clean sheet and have conceded six times at home while scoring 12 times at Old Trafford during the same period. Nine of those 12 goals came against two of the Premier League’s worst teams, Newcastle United and Leeds United.

Atalanta are coming off of 4-1 win away to Empoli at the weekend. Gasperini’s team are unbeaten in six of the last seven games in all competitions. Their only defeat over the course of that seven-game run was against AC Milan.

Atalanta are unbeaten on the road in 2021-22. La Dea have posted a record of 3W-2D-0L across five games in all competitions. Atalanta have outscored opponents 11-6 away from the Gewiss Stadium. Yet despite this, if you wish to bet on an Atalanta win at full-time you can get long odds of 7/2. There must be value in the Italians picking up three points, surely?

Manchester United vs Atalanta Team News

Manchester United will be without centre-back Raphael Varane. Harry Maguire returned at the weekend from injury and his mistake allowed Leicester City to score one of their four goals. After the game, it came out that Maguire rushed back from injury. If he isn’t not fully fit for Wednesday night, Maguire could sit out the game.

Amad Diallo, who signed for big money from Atalanta last season, is still ruled out with an injury. Anthony Martial is ruled out once more. Midfielder Fred and forward Edinson Cavani both returned from South America late following the October international break. The duo is likely to make the squad. Aaron Wan-Bissaka is back from suspension after an appeal.

Gasperini will be without Hans Hateboer and Robin Gosens due to injuries. Adding to Gasperini’s injury issues are the absences of Matteo Pessina and Berat Djimsiti. The duo won’t travel to Old Trafford with the squad and will stay behind in Bergamo.

Striker Duvan Zapata leads Atalanta in goals with four in eight games in all competitions. Zapata scored against Empoli at the weekend. Zapata has four assists as well. He should lead the attack versus Manchester United with Josip Ilici in support. Ilici scored twice at the weekend.
