Manchester United are coming off of a 2-1 home loss to Leicester City on Tuesday night. The defeat handed Manchester City the Premier League title. Now, the Red Devils turn their attention to Liverpool, in a fixture that was postponed due to Manchester United’s fans storming Old Trafford.

The Red Devils qualified for the Europa League Final against Villarreal. Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will aim to keep the team fit and healthy going into the game. However, Thursday night’s quick turnaround could see the squad stretched. Although the Manchester United and Liverpool fixture isn’t considered a derby, this is certainly the biggest match in English football. In the same way Juventus and Inter Milan play the Derby D’Italia, Manchester United and Liverpool play the England Derby.

Liverpool are seven  points off of fourth-place Chelsea but have two games in hand. The Reds desperately need to win on Thursday especially with Chelsea’s focus on next this weekend’s FA Cup Final against Leicester City. The Reds can make up ground. The reverse fixture between the clubs at Anfield finished nil-nil with the teams unable to find a breakthrough. Manchester United did claim a 3-2 win in the FA Cup fourth road at Old Trafford in January.

Manchester United vs Liverpool Betting Odds

Solskjaer’s team go into the fixture on Thursday night as favourites according to leading bookies. The Red Devils are at odds of 2/1 to win at full-time. Liverpool have struggled against Manchester United at Old Trafford in recent seasons. They failed to win on each of their last eight trips to Old Trafford in all competitions. Their last win at the Theatre of Dreams came in 2013-14 – a lifetime ago in football. Their last two matches at Old Trafford in the Premier League both ended in draws.

Liverpool are at odds of 7/5 to win at full-time versus Manchester United. The Reds are desperate to get a league win and to end a winless drought on the red side of Manchester. Liverpool won last weekend at home against Southampton 2-0. The Reds are now unbeaten in their last six games and surprisingly top the current league form table with 14 points from the last 18.

Goals are coming more frequently for Jurgen Klopp’s team. They scored 10 times in the last six matches. Defensively they conceded just three times to opponents. It is a good record but late mental lapses have cost the Reds.

Manchester United took 13 points from the last 18 on offer in the division. They won four, drew once, and lost once during that run. The Red Devils have overachieved in points this season compared to expected points. The team have an actual tally of 70 points compared to an expected points figure of 61.22. If the table was determined by expected points, the Red Devils would finish third behind Manchester City and Chelsea.

Manchester United vs Liverpool Team News

Solskjaer may not need to rotate the team for Liverpool’s arrival after resting key players at the start versus Leicester City. Centre-back Harry Maguire is ruled out of the game after suffering an ankle injury against Aston Villa last weekend. Solskjaer needs the defender back for the Europa League Final and will keep Maguire out of the team in the league with the title now decided.

The Manchester United manager has two other injuries to worry about as Anthony Martial and Daniel James remain sidelined. Edinson Cavani is likely to start in attack along with Marcus Rashford. Solskjaer should give Mason Greenwood a starting role as well. The teenager scored on Tuesday against Leicester City.

Klopp has 10 names on the Liverpool injury list. The big names of Jordan Henderson, Joel Matip, Joe Gomez, and Virgil Van Dijk remain out. Midfielder James Milner is a doubt with an injury. Centre-back Ozan Kabak is ruled out with an injury and Klopp is likely to start Fabinho and Nat Phillips together in defence. Although Rhys Williams started against Southampton, the youngster had a nightmare performance against Manchester United at Old Trafford in the FA Cup. Naby Keita, Ben Davies, and Divock Origi are all ruled out.

Is a 1-1 score draw on the cards for this week between Manchester United and Liverpool? There is a good possibility that these teams will play out a score draw once more at Old Trafford. The last two matches played at the Theatre of Dreams finished in draws – 1-1 and nil-nil. Seven of the last 11 games in all competitions between the teams finished as draws. Three of those fixtures finished with 1-1 scorelines and 10 of the last 13 games between the teams ended with under 2.5 goals scored. Will we see a repeat of last season’s 1-1 draw at Old Trafford or will it be more like this year’s FA Cup fourth round 3-2 Manchester United win? Based on form, trends, and Manchester United’s Europa League commitments, we could see over 2.5 goals.
