The PGA Tour makes its way to Ohio this week for the Memorial Tournament with Rory McIlroy looking to follow up his PGA Championship win at Wentworth. Golf betting expert David August is on hand with his best bets from this week’s event…

David August's Memorial Tips

Luke Donald 1pt ew @ 28-1

Gary Woodland 1pt ew @ 35-1

Kevin Chappell 1pt ew @ 66-1

David Hearn 1pt ew @ 125-1

WHERE: Muirfield Village Golf Club, Dublin, Ohio.

NOTES ABOUT THE TOURNAMENT: As usual a high-class field has gathered in Ohio for one of the most prestigious non-major events on the PGA tour schedule. The cream comes to the top at Muirfield Village due to it being mainly by invitation. Experience counts for a lot, although debutants and big-priced outsiders have been known to hit the frame. It's also a good warm up for the US Open.

COURSE CHARACTERISTICS: The track is basically a second-shot course that also puts a premium on the player's short game. The tough challenge it presents is further highlighted by the fact that the par-72 layout ranked sixth of 43 courses in difficulty in 2013. However, the rough is never too penal and accuracy off the tee is not a major factor as last year's winner Matt Kuchar proved by being ranked 37th for fairways hit.

The Main Men

RORY McILROY (17-2): Yet to reach the dizzy heights of his first two appearances in the Memorial which produced a fifth and a 10th. However, back to winning form at Wentworth, so very much one to consider.

ADAM SCOTT (11-1): The 13th he achieved in 2013 was his best return since successive top fives in 2006/07. Following a play-off victory at Colonial on Sunday he will surely make the top-10 again.

MATT KUCHAR (16-1): Five consecutive top-10s in the Memorial include a win last year and a second in 2011. Generally very consistent this term, although he missed the cut in the Crowne Plaza.

JUSTIN ROSE (18-1): The Memorial has proved very profitable. Captured the title in 2010 having been second in 2008 and has finished eighth in each of the last two seasons.

LUKE DONALD (28-1): Clearly enjoys playing Muirfield having not finished lower than 21st (2013) in five recent starts in the Memorial and could prove best of those near the head of the market following a tied third on Sunday at Wentworth.

JIM FURYK (28-1): Four top-25s in the last five years include a second in 2009 and a 10th the following year. Two top-class second place finishes this year overshadow a poor performance last week.

DUSTIN JOHNSON (28-1): Carded a 66 last Sunday to climb 36 places to 14th at Colonial and that followed a very decent seventh in the Byron Nelson. Also has a solitary top-10 in Memorial.

JORDAN SPIETH (28-1): Far better player now than the one that finished out with the washing on his 2013 Memorial debut. Outstanding claims on his second in the Masters in April and fourth in the PLAYERS a couple weeks later.

PHIL MICKELSON (30-1): Always one to fear but not playing anywhere near his best this season and so I reckon he's one to avoid this week..

GARY WOODLAND (35-1): Has two pieces of decent course and distance form to recommend him and with a last time out seventh in the Byron Nelson, I reckon 35-1 looks fair value.

KEVIN CHAPPELL (66-1): I think the bookies are a little generous offering 66-1 about a player who was runner-up in the Memorial in 2013 and finished 10th at Colonial on Sunday.

BILL HAAS (66-1): Led at the halfway stage in 2013 on his way to fourth spot (his best return to date). Playing solidly of late with top-20s including one at Augusta while he has not missed a cut this year.

HIDEKI MATSUYAMA (66-1): Muirfield is not an easy place to conquer on your debut, but the young Japan star could go well after a very promising 10th (led after three rounds) last Sunday at Colonial.

FREDRIK JACOBSON (80-1): Has course form having finished fifth in 2007 but probably more important is a last time out third in the Crowne Plaza Invitational.

CHRIS KIRK (80-1): Gone the distance in all tournaments he has taken part in this year. The highlight being a second in the Sony Open, although recent form includes a 20th in the Masters and a 13th in the PLAYERS Championship.

DAVID HEARN (125-1): I'm hoping the Canadian can be the one among those at triple-figure odds to hit the frame as he has top-25s in two starts at Muirfield and was an outstanding sixth in the PLAYERS Championship.

RUSSELL KNOX (125-1): Worth considering having produced several decent results on occasions in 2014, most notably when second in the Honda Classic and ninth in the Heritage.
