- Montpellier v Monaco (Over/Under - Over 2.5)
Monaco are aiming for a third consecutive win when they visit Montpellier on Friday night to kick off the Ligue 1 weekend. Manager Niko Kovac has been a success in his first season at the principality club. Monaco are fourth in the league table (a Europa League place in Ligue 1). The red and white are just seven points off of top of the table Lyon in what is a very close race for the Ligue 1 title – for a change. Monaco are six points off the Champions League qualification places as Paris Saint-Germain and Lille sit ahead of them.
Montpellier start matchday 20 in eighth place with 28 points from 57 on offer. La Paillade are winless in their last five Ligue 1 matches with three of those fixtures ending in lose. They were a side that was fighting for a top-four place earlier in the campaign. However, over the last month, Montpellier have fallen off of the top-four pace. Still, La Paillade are just five points off of the top four going into the weekend and could cut that to two points with a win versus Monaco.
Monaco are unbeaten in their last two matches versus Montpellier. The two clubs played twice in 2019-20 and have met once already this season. Their fixture from earlier this campaign ended 1-1 in Monaco.
Montpellier vs Monaco Betting Odds
Montpellier have played poorly at the Stade de la Mosson this season collecting a mere 13 points from 30 on offer. Each of their last four matches at home ended without a win. Three of those fixtures were defeats. Manager Michel Der Zakarian’s team are struggling to get wins and should once more this weekend versus Monaco at home.
La Paillade are at odds of 3/1 to turn the tide and claim a win at full-time versus Monaco at the weekend. Montpellier did win this fixture during the 2019-20 season. The home team are unbeaten in four straight matches when Montpellier and Monaco have played.
If there has been a weakness for Kovac’s Monaco it has been their away form. Monaco have taken 12 points from 27 on offer away from home. The good news for the manager is that the last two road games finished in victories for the white and red. Monaco have nearly doubled their points at home (21 from 30) compared to their road points. If Kovac can sort them out on the road, they can certainly challenge for the Champions League places.
Monaco are at odds of 20/23 to claim an away win at the Stade de la Mosson. In spite of being favourite, Monaco have not won away against Montpellier since the 2016-17 Ligue 1 season. Monaco have drawn two and lost one of their last three matches played at the Stade de la Mosson.
Montpellier vs Monaco Team News
Kovac recently got forward Aleksandr Golovin back from a four-month injury layoff. His return is like having a new player. Golovin provides greater depth to Kovac and more quality to come into the side. Monaco are coming off of a 3-0 thrashing of Anger in their last match as Kevin Volland, Stevan Jovetic, and Guillermo Maripan all got on the scoresheet. Kovac has a blend of young and old players, and that mix is getting results.
Monaco players Florentino Luis and Cesc Fabregas are both suffering from injuries. Luis tested positive for COVID-19 and will miss the fixture as he quarantines. Fabregas is recovering from a calf strain. He is expected back in the coming weeks. Friday night’s match may come too early for the former Chelsea player to return, however.
Der Zakarian has two players suffering from injuries. Teji Savanier and Stephy Mavidi both tested positive for COVID-19 and will miss out on the Friday night fixture. Montpellier will play second-placed Paris Saint-Germain in their following match and Der Zakarian will hope the duo is fit for the fixture. Mavididi is a big loss for Montpellier as he has scored four times in Ligue 1.
Montpellier are led in attack by Andy Delort. The forward has scored eight times and contributed six assists. He has accounted for 14 of Montpellier’s 31 goals in Ligue 1 through goals or assists.

Over 2.5 goals scored @ 7/10 - BET NOW
Three of the last five matches between Montpellier and Monaco in the league finished with over 2.5 goals scored. Although their game in Monaco was a defensive battler earlier this season, expect more from both clubs in the final third. Montpellier are conceding goals galore at the moment while Monaco are scoring them.
Monaco have tallied 12 goals over the course of their last six league matches. Three straight fixtures ended with over 2.5 goals for Monaco. Montpellier scored nine goals over the course of their last six league matches. However, they conceded 13 times during that six-match timeframe. Four of their last six league matches ended with over 2.5 goals scored.
Montpellier are in decline currently and on a rot run of form. Monaco are improving each week under Kovac. They should get a first win away against Montpellier since the 2016-17 campaign.
