Paderborn sit at the bottom of the Bundesliga heading into matchday 27. The club, who came up from the Bundesliga 2 last season, are likely to go right back down having collected just 17 points from 26 games. On the Bundesliga’s return last weekend, Paderborn could only manage a nil-nil result against relegation rival Fortuna Dusseldorf. Now, they will host Hoffenheim, who struggled at home against Hertha Berlin.
Hoffenheim fell 3-0 to an inspired Hertha Berlin over the weekend. They are now winless in their last six league fixtures with four of those games ending in losses. Hoffenheim, like Paderborn, have collected a mere two points from their last 18 possible and sit at the bottom of the Bundesliga form table.
Although Hoffenheim are only four points off of the final Europa League place, their form has them off the pace. Europa League qualification now looks unlikely unless coach Alfred Schreuder does something fast. Hoffenheim did score a 3-0 win against Paderborn earlier this campaign. Robert Skov, Pavel Kaderabek, and Jurgen Locadia scored all three Hoffenheim goals inside the opening 25 minutes of the game.
Since 2007, Paderborn and Hoffenheim have met five times since 2007. Hoffenheim have not lost during that five-match span. The Blues won four and drew one of those five fixtures.
Paderborn will hope to turn around their poor home form when Hoffenheim come to visit. The Bundesliga’s bottom side have collected just seven points from 39 possible at home with four straight fixtures all ending in defeat. Paderborn have allowed the second-most goals on their own turf with 31. Their last four home games saw them outscored 12-5.
Hoffenheim have been very good on their travels. They have taken 19 points from 36 away from home. The Blues have only lost once in their last five away games picking up eight points from 15. Schreuder’s team are +4 in goal difference on the road.
The last five matches between Paderborn and Hoffenheim saw the former held scoreless by the latter. The Blues won four of their games to nil while the fifth ended nil-nil. Seven times this season Paderborn have been held scoreless in matches in all competitions. Two of their last three Bundesliga games finished without a goal being scored.
Five times this campaign, Hoffenheim have won to nil. That includes their 3-0 victory from earlier this season versus Paderborn. Can Hoffenheim win to nil once more? If they are to win to nil, they must reverse their current form.
Paderborn go into the match at odds of 9/4 to win while Hoffenheim can be backd at odds of 23/20 to beat the bottom side.
Paderborn are likely to be without Luca Kilian. The 20-year-old defender is struggling with a thigh injury. He is due back this month, so could get back into the team for Hoffenheim’s visit. Paderborn have been one of the Bundesliga’s most aggressive teams during the campaign recording 60 yellow cards and two red cards.
Hoffenheim have a number of injuries that Schreuder will need to address. The club’s injury issues caused problems during the Blues’ loss to Hertha Berlin. Hoffenheim were completely played off the park and Schreuder needs to get his players fit if they want to continue their fight for the final Europa League place.
Striker Munas Dabbbur is out until June with a knee injury. Andrej Kramaric, the club’s leading goalscorer, is struggling with an ankle injury and could also miss out on the game. Kramaric’s return is listed as unknown currently. Fellow striker Ishak Belfodil is also out with an injury and isn’t expected back until next season. The good news for Schreuder is Sargis Adamyan could return to the team for the fixture. He is recovering from an ankle issue and is expected back in late May.
Hoffenheim are fifth in the league in average possession per game with 52%. They should once again be able to dictate the pace of the match versus Paderborn.
Under 2.5 goals scored - 7/5 - BET NOW
Although Hoffenheim scored three goals the last time these two teams played, their form has not been good. They are now six games without a win and coming off of a 3-0 loss to Hertha Berlin at home. Hoffenheim have scored just four times in their last six games. They should be able to get a goal versus a poor Paderborn team. The question will be, can Paderborn get a goal?
Hoffenheim to score a penalty - 5/1 - BET NOW
The first weekend of the restart showed that penalties will be given due to sloppy defending. On Sunday alone, the two fixtures played saw a penalty given in each of them. Saturday’s late game between Eintracht Frankfurt and Borussia Monchengladbach also saw a penalty given. The restart has been fine for the attack, but defences have struggled to keep up.
Hoffenheim to win to nil - 7/2 - BET NOW
Hoffenheim easily defeated Paderborn 3-0 when the teams met in November. Paderborn have been held scoreless in two of their last three matches in the Bundesliga. Seven times this season, Paderborn have been held scoreless by their opponents. Meanwhile, Hoffenheim have kept six clean sheets against their Bundesliga rivals.
In five fixtures between 2007 and 2019, Hoffenheim kept five clean sheets in five matches against Paderborn. The Blues have been excellent against Paderborn and that form is likely to continue at the weekend when they meet.
Hoffenheim have slipped up over the course of their last six league games. They still have a shot at qualifying for the Europa League for next season. However, if they continue to drop points then the gap between Hoffenheim and the top six will grow further.
Paderborn are six points from the relegation playoff place. They must win at home versus Hoffenheim to have any hope of survival. However, it is unlikely Paderborn will get the result they need as Hoffenheim win once more.
