Poland and Slovakia will meet on Monday to kick off their Euro 2020 campaigns. The teams are joined by Spain and Sweden in Group E. A good start on Monday could be the catalyst to one of these two sides reaching the knockout stages. Spain are tipped to win Group E while Poland, Slovakia, and Sweden will fight for second place. Group E could produce one of the four third-place teams to advance to the knockout stages.

Paulo Sousa will hope Robert Lewandowski can lead the national side through the group stage. Despite Lewandowski’s great form for Bayern Munich, he has struggled to translate it over to the national team. Poland are ranked 21 in the world today. They have played decently in 2021 but are winless in three straight fixtures.

Slovakia are ranked 36 in the world going into the Euro 2020 tournament. The Slovakians are unbeaten in 2021 but just one of their five matches this year finished in a victory. Their buildup friendlies for the Euro 2020 tournament didn’t go well. Slovakia drew 1-1 with Bulgaria and nil-nil with Austria.

Poland also drew their two warm-up friendlies. Sousa’s squad drew 1-1 with Russia and 2-2 with Iceland. The team’s draw with Iceland was a bit of a shock in the buildup to the tournament. Which side can get their Euro 2020 campaigns off to a good start?

Poland vs Slovakia Betting Odds

Sousa was appointed as Poland manager in January. He was a good hire following coaching stints around the world in countries such as Hungary, Israel, Switzerland, China, France, Italy and England. In England, Sousa managed Queens Park Rangers, Leicester City, and Swansea City; but his most success at club level came with league titles at FC Basel and Maccabi Tel Aviv.

Sousa was hired to bring a more attacking approach to the national team. The Polish FA may have made the move for Sousa in an attempt to get Lewandowski to finally fire on the international level. Poland are not the strongest side in the group. However, they will hope to finish in second.

Poland were good at the Euro 2016 tournament but disappointed at the World Cup 2018 in Russia. They won just once in three games at the World Cup 2018. If Poland can get off the mark with a win versus Slovakia, they could qualify for the quarterfinals. Four or five points in Group E could be enough to progress to the knockout stage.

Leading sportsbooks have Poland at odds of 5/6 to win at full-time versus Slovakia. Meanwhile, Slovakia coach Štefan Tarkovic’s team go into the game at odds of 9/2 to win at full-time. Euro 2020 is just the second European Championship Poland have qualified for. They reached the finals through the Nations League playoffs. Poland eliminated Ireland and Northern Ireland in the Nations League playoffs enroute to the tournament.

Poland vs Slovakia Team News

Slovakia’s star man at this summer’s tournament is Inter Milan defender Milan Skriniar. He is coming fresh off of winning Serie A with Inter Milan. Skriniar is considered one of the best centre-backs in Europe. It will be his job to mark Lewandowski. Slovakia’s top attacking player is Michal Duris who has scored seven goals in 55 international matches.

The team’s chief goal creator is Ondrej Duda from Koln. The team’s midfield may be its strongest asset with the likes of Juraj Kucka, Vladimir Weiss, and Stanislav Lobotka available. Tarkovic has Marek Hamsik available and will be captain of the team.

Tarkovic took over after former manager Pavel Hapal was sacked in the buildup to the team’s playoff versus Northern Ireland in October 2020. Tarkovic was an assistant to Hapal. After a successful playoff, Tarkovic was given the job.

Lewandowski’s performance at the tournament is what Poland’s hopes hinge on. Hertha Berlin striker Krzysztof Piatek will miss the tournament after suffering a serious injury with the German club to finish the season. Sousa would have had a star goalscorer had Piatek been available. Centre-back Kamil Glik will anchor the team’s defence. Other than midfielder Grzegorz Krychowiak, the team’s midfield looks quite light. West Brom’s Kamil Grosicki was not called up to the national team. Sousa has a team, on paper, good enough to get to the quarterfinals.

Both teams to score: YES @ 6/5 - BET NOW

Poland’s last three matches ended with both teams scoring. While Sousa’s team may be more attacking and have Lewandowski in the team, the defence has been guilty of allowing goals. Three of Poland’s last four matches ended with both teams scoring goals. The talent in the Slovakia team is not high. On paper, Slovakia are low on quality in the forward position. They may struggle to get goals at teh tournament, but should get on the scoresheet versus Poland.

Robert Lewandowski to score anytime @ 21/20 - BET NOW

Lewandowski had another brilliant club season. He desperately needs to translate that form over to the international stage if Poland are to reach the quarterfinals. Lewandowski scored 48 goals in 40 matches in all competitions for Bayern Munich. The striker has tallied 66 goals in 118 games for Poland. As always, how Lewandowski goes, Poland go. If he does well, the team will do well too.

Over 2.5 goals scored @ 6/4 - BET NOW

Four of Poland’s last five matches in all competitions finished with over 2.5 goals scored. Two of Slovakia’s last four matches finished with over 2.5 goals scored. There is a potential for goals from these teams.

Poland should claim a victory against Slovakia on Monday to kickstart their Euro 2020 tournament. It is difficult to see just how Slovakia will collect wins. They will fight Sweden and Poland for the second spot in the group. However, Poland should be too strong in attack on Monday. Two of Slovakia’s last five matches ended without the team scoring. If Lewandowski catches fire, watch out for Poland in the group stage.
