A South coast derby between Southampton and Brighton is the final game of this Premier League weekend as Mark Hughes and Chris Hughton face off at St Mary’s. Dan McCarthy gives his tips ahead of the game.
Southampton @ 11/10 – BET NOW
Southampton did not appear to make a lightning start to the campaign but they have picked up form of late, winning their last two matches which includes a 1-0 success at Brighton in the Carabao Cup.
Admittedly both managers had made changes for that particular clash but Mark Hughes’s men followed that victory up with a 2-0 success at Crystal Palace and have the better form of the two going into this clash.
Brighton @ 16/5 – BET NOW
Brighton of course caused an early shock this term by beating Manchester United 3-2 at the Amex – their only win in their last six league matches - but they have been unable to repeat that performance and result, going winless in their subsequent three games.
They did battle back from 2-0 down to salvage a point at home last time out against Fulham but there appear to be major problems on the road, with the Seagulls having not scored away in the league since April’s 3-1 defeat at Manchester City.
Correct Score 0-0 @ 15/2 – BET NOW
This particular fixture does not exactly have goals written all over it.
Saints have only managed to score four goals in four games so far this season while Brighton have not done much better as they have netted five times, but all at home.
Charlie Austin has so far not found his shooting boots this season, having missed a penalty in the win over Palace while Danny Ings is still, understandably, finding his feet after three horrendous injury-hampered years at Liverpool.
Beyond that, it is hard to see where the goals are going to come from.
Brighton do have a goalscorer seemingly in form at the moment in Glenn Murray, who has netted three of the Seagulls’ five goals so far this season, but he, along with anyone else, needs to find a way to score away from the Amex with Hughton’s men having gone five hours and 20 minutes without a road goal.
Southampton - Clean sheet @ 7/5 – BET NOW
One of the few shining lights in Mark Hughes’ tenure as Southampton boss far has been the re-emergence of Alex McCarthy as one of the best English goalkeepers in the Premier League.
His form saw him recalled to the England squad for the recent international break, although he has yet to take to the pitch for the senior side.
However, Brighton cannot score on the road and it would be no surprise to see him secure a second successive clean sheet, while it offers a safer option for those considering the correct score betting.
Penalty In Match - Yes @ 2/1 – BET NOW
There has already been four penalties awarded in games involving both Southampton and Brighton this season, with three going to Brighton.
Both sides have tricky wingers in Nathan Redmond and Anthony Knockaert, who are often the target of challenges in the box due to their skill and quickness.
Saints defenders Jack Stephens and Wesley Hoedt and Brighton counterparts Shane Duffy and Lewis Dunk are all wholehearted but can sometimes be guilty of being clumsy, and a penalty could be awarded in this game.
