Chelsea are a wildcard going into the 2022-23 Premier League season. The Blues were expected to challenge for the Premier League title last term under Thomas Tuchel, but by Christmas, Chelsea had fallen off of the title chase.

Tuchel’s team ultimately finished third with goals difficult to come by on a regular basis. The club was bought by Todd Boehly and a group of business people in the offseason, and the new owners are still working on building the playing squad.

Chelsea have experienced turnover this offseason with several players, including Romelu Lukaku leaving the club. Chelsea have signed two big-named players with Raheem Sterling being the biggest off them. Can Chelsea challenge for the league title or will it be a season in which the Blues spend time battling for a top-four place?

Chelsea Betting Odds

Chelsea finished third last season in the Premier League. Based on the squad moves Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur have done in the offseason, Chelsea may struggle to finish in the top four. Three of Chelsea’s top first-team players departed in the offseason.

Antonio Rudiger joined Real Madrid on a free transfer and Andreas Christensen signed on a free transfer with Barcelona. Meanwhile, Chelsea allowed striker Romelu Lukaku to join Inter Milan on a loan for the entire season.

There are questions about where Chelsea’s goals will come from. Raheem Sterling has joined the club, but Timo Werner (who could still leave) has failed to score the goals expected of him.

Chelsea’s best betting odds to win the Premier League title are 16/1. The Blues have the fourth-best odds to win the trophy. At this moment, Chelsea could struggle to finish in the top four. Their best betting odds to end the season in the Champions League places are at 8/11. The Blues best betting odds to end the campaign in the top six are at 2/9.

Chelsea New Signings

Chelsea’s biggest offseason signing is Raheem Sterling. The forward wasn’t needed at Man City and allowed to leave for £47.5 million. Sterling has scored double digit goals in each of the last five seasons. Thirteen goals were scored last term. How well will Sterling do in the Chelsea attack, however?

Perhaps one of the most overlooked transfers of the summer in the Premier League was Chelsea’s signing of centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly. The defender joined from Napoli for £33m. Koulibaly will replace Rudiger, but the Blues still arguably need further additions to the defence.

The Blues also splashed cash on teen midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka from Aston Villa. The highly-rated teenager had attracted interest from clubs around Europe. Chelsea also added Eddie Beach, Omari Hutchinson, and Gabriel Slonina during the offseason.

Chelsea Potential Incomings

Chelsea need a goal scorer. Sterling has scored 20 goals just once previously during the 2019-20 season. Lukaku’s departure came after just one season, which was hugely disappointing. Timo Werner and Kai Havertz had disappointing campaigns last term and a lack of goals at times prevented Chelsea from challenging for the title.

While Chelsea are in need of a goal scorer, they are also seeking defensive cover. Marc Cucurella is on the team’s radar and the Brighton full-back could join the Blues this summer. Man City were in for Cucurella but Brighton ended negotiations after growing tired of the Cityzens’ tactics.

Chelsea had been linked to Cristiano Ronaldo early in the summer, but those links have died. Meanwhile, the Blues have entered the race for defensive midfielder Frenkie de Jong. Barcelona are desperate to sell De Jong, but the player doesn’t want to leave.

Chelsea Outgoings

The Blues lost two significant defensive players in the offseason. Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger both left on free transfers. The Blues could still use another centre-back to make up for losing both players.

Romelu Lukaku was loaned to Inter Milan just 12 months after arriving from the Italians. While a handful of other players left the club for various reasons, Christensen, Rudiger, and Lukaku are the most significant players to go.

Chelsea Manager Verdict

Thomas Tuchel is a brilliant manager. He won the Champions League in his first season at Chelsea. The Blues reached the Carabao Cup and FA Cup finals last season, but lost on penalties both times to Liverpool.

Chelsea also reached the Champions League quarterfinals. The Blues were beaten by Real Madrid in an epic tie. Tuchel can lead Chelsea to the title, but the players available at Stamford Bridge haven’t been consistent.

Although Chelsea scored the third-most goals, 76, in 2021-22, the Blues struggled at times to score in league matches. Tuchel has to find a player to score goals and take games by the scruff of the neck. Chelsea’s defence was good throughout the campaign. The Blues conceded the third-fewest goals with just 33.

Chelsea Prediction

Chelsea may struggle to finish in the top four. The Blues will have the entire month of August to sign more players and owner Todd Boehly will add further players if needed. Chelsea should still have a strong defence in 2022-23. Once again, the issue will be scoring goals, especially against the league’s top teams.

Chelsea had a good head-to-head record against Liverpool, Arsenal, Spurs, and Man United last season. The Blues took 13 points from head-to-head matches against the top six last season. Man City were the only top-six team to take all six points in head-to-head games against Chelsea last term.

The Blued finished third last season, but Spurs are much improved going into the new season. Chelsea did the double over Spurs last season, but it is difficult to see them dominating Tottenham once more. The same goes for matches this season against Arsenal.

Our betting tips prediction is for Chelsea, based on their squad right now, spend the season battling for fourth place. In the end, Chelsea will continue to be too strong for Arsenal and Man United. The Blues won’t have enough firepower to enter the title race with Man City, Liverpool, and Tottenham Hotspur. If Chelsea can add further to the squad before falling too far behind the league leaders, they could find their way into the title tilt.
