Sevilla and Roma were unable to complete their first leg match in the Europa League last 16 due to the Covid-19 outbreak in both Spain and Italy. Now, nearly six months later, the two clubs will finally lock horns as the two-legged series has been reduced to just a one-off match.
Due to the two-leg series being reduced to one match, the fixture will be held at the MSV Arena in Duisburg, Germany. Neither team will have a home field advantage for the game. If there is one advantage that Roma could have for the fixture, it is that they only finished the Serie A campaign on August 1st. Paulo Fonseca’s team finished the final eight games of the domestic season without a loss. Seven of those matches finished in victory. Roma finished the Serie A season in fifth place and eight points off of the Champions League qualification places.
Sevilla finished their domestic season in great form. They went unbeaten in their final 11 games winning six games. Their form enabled them to finish fourth in La Liga and qualify for the Champions League. Sevilla manager Julen Lopetegui has Sevilla playing well heading into the fixture and will fancy getting his side to the next round.
Los Rojiblancos won five Europa League trophies between 2006 and 2016. Remarkably, former manager Unai Emery helped the club secure three straight Europa League titles between 2014 and 2016.
Sevilla are a bit fortunate to be in the last 16. They nearly came unstuck in the Europa League last 32 against Cluj. Sevilla claimed a 1-1 draw away in Romania before playing out a nil-nil draw at home in the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan. Their away goal in Romania proved to be difference as the tie finished 1-1 on aggregate.
Roma also narrowly overcame their round of 32 opposition. The Giallorossi claimed a 1-0 win at home against Belgium’s Gent. Paulo Fonseca’s team then went to Belgium and left with a 1-1 draw to gain progression to the next round 2-1 on aggregate.
These teams met in two friendly matches in 2015 and 2017 respectively. Roma won the 2015 exhibition game 6-4 while Sevilla gain victory in the second friendly game 2-1. Due to the matches being friendlies, they will have little influence on the outcome of Thursday night’s Europa League last 16 game.
The winner of the last 16 tie between Sevilla and Roma will clash with either English Premier League team Wolverhampton Wanderers or Greece’s Olimpiacos. Their tie is level at 1-1 with Wolves having the advantage due to an away goal. The quarterfinal game will take place five days later.
Lopetegui is sweating the fitness of two players heading into the game. Fernando and Tomas Vaclik are both fighting to get fit for the game in Duisburg. The players are both recovering from knee injuries and are expected back in early August.
The Sevilla manager will have midfielder Ever Banega available for selection in spite of signing to join Al Shabab in Saudi Arabia. The midfielder has postponed the move to Al Shabab until Sevilla complete the Europa League. Banega has scored three goals and tallied eight assists in 33 games in all competitions. He only tallied one assist along with zero goals in the Europa League.
Eight days prior to the Europa League tie, Sevilla did announce that an unnamed player was diagnosed as an asymptomatic carry of Covid-19.
Fonseca goes into Thursday night’s game with no major injuries. Back-up goalkeeper Antonio Mirante could absent due to an ankle injury. The two clubs should be evenly matched with Thursday night’s one-off game an exciting affair. Neither side are likely to compete for league titles next term, but winning the Europa League this year is possible. Roma may have the edge in forward areas. Edin Dzeko maybe on the wrong side of 30 but remains a deadly marksman. He has scored 19 goals in 42 games in all competitions.
Diego Perotti to score anytime - BET NOW
Diego Perotti is one of Roma’s unsung heroes. The winger scored twice at the weekend in Roma’s final game of the season as they defeated Juventus 3-1. The 32-year-old played in just 26 games prior to the Europa League restart scoring 6 goals and tallying four assists. He played in just four of Roma’s eight European games due to various injuries. Perotti is a former Sevilla player and could undo his ex-team with a goal.
Over 2.5 goals scored - BET NOW
Four of Roma’s Europa League matches this season saw the game finish with over 2.5 goals scored. Nine straight Roma games ended with over 2.5 goals to finish off the Serie A campaign. Fonseca has the club scoring goals and attacking in a free-flowing manner. Sevilla saw four of their last six La Liga games finish with under 2.5 goals scored. However, at no time during those six fixtures did Sevilla play a team as potent in attack as Roma.
Both teams to score - BET NOW
Six of Roma’s eight Europa League games in 2019-20 saw both teams score goals. Sevilla’s defence was far stronger in the Europa League but the quality of competition can be questioned. APOEL, Dudelange, and Qarabag were Los Rojiblancos’ three opponents in the Europa League group stage and all three struggled to get goals when playing Sevilla.
The last 16 match between these two sides will be a one-off game. Due to the Europa League last 16 tie being just one game, this could be anyone’s match. Both Sevilla and Roma finished the domestic campaign in fine form. Roma are coming off of playing last weekend while Sevilla had two weeks off. The break could actually hurt Roma when the two sides play.
Roma arguably have the more exciting attack and it scored goals galore in Serie A after the restart. The Giallorossi should find a way to get past Sevilla and win. The Spanish side haven’t faced an attack like Roma’s in some time.
