Chris Wilder’s Sheffield United are in a sophomore slump and things could get worse as Yorkshire Derby rival Leeds United arrive at Bramall Lane on Sunday. Sheffield United have lost their two opening games of the Premier League season and failed to score in either game. Wilder may have focused on adding defensive players in the transfer window, but unless the goalscoring issues get ironed out, the Blades will fight relegation this term.
Leeds United have put on two exciting games for fans who love goals. The Whites’ two opening games of the Premier League season both saw seven goals combined. Marcelo Bielsa’s team are inconsistent on the pitch and showed defensive frailties once more in a 4-3 win at home against Fulham at the weekend. For all the praise Leeds United have received, Bielsa’s tactics seem unlikely to keep the team from conceding goals this term.
Sheffield United and Leeds United have not met since the 2018-19 EFL Championship season. Leeds United looked likely to win automatic promotion that season but were pipped to the top two by the Blades. In the end, Leeds United had to wait until the 2019-20 season to gain promotion to the top-flight.
Sheffield United vs Leeds Betting Odds
Sheffield United kicked off the Premier League season with a 2-0 loss at Bramall Lane against Wolverhampton Wanderers. Bramall Lane was a fortress in 2019-20 and one of the reasons the Blades were able to retain their Premier League status. They have not been as defensively solid as last term despite additions to the backline. More worryingly, Sheffield United are not getting the timely goals they did previously.
Against Wolverhampton Wanderers, Sheffield United conceded twice in the opening six minutes. They did keep 56% possession and tallied nine shots. Only two shots landed on target, however. The Blades have scored zero goals and have an expected goal total of 1.80.
Leed United lost on opening day at Anfield, 4-3. The Whites had a chance to win the game late, or at least draw, but a late penalty conceded by new signing Rodrigo Moreno allowed Liverpool to grab the win.
Leeds United have been wide-open at times in defence and summer centre-back signing Robin Koch has been a nightmare at the back, conceding a penalty in each Premier League game this term. The Whites kept 51% of the possession against Sheffield United and tallied seven shots on target from 10 shots total. They did give up 14 shots to Fulham on matchday 2.
Sheffield United vs Leeds Team News
Wilder will be without defender John Egan after he was sent off versus Aston Villa on Monday night. The Blades played 78 minutes of football with just 10 men after Egan’s sending off. Also missing from the game will be striker Lys Mousset. In a recent interview, Wilder stated he doesn’t know if or when Mousset will be back this month.
Sheffield United back-up goalkeeper will sit out the game as well. He is healing a broken finger. Aaron Ramsdale has been Wilder’s preferred shot-stopper. Wilder desperately needs to sign a striker. It was reported that Sheffield United approached Liverpool for Rhian Brewster. However, the striker could go to Crystal Palace instead.
Bielsa has three players on the injury list and set to miss the fixture. Adam Forshaw is recovering from a groin issue and will sit out the game. Gaetano Berardi continues to recover from an ACL injury. No return date has been given for Berardi. Midfielder Pablo Herandez is ruled out currently. He has a tight groin preventing him from playing.
Leeds United are still linked with a number of players. Ryan Kent, Harry Wilson, and Joao Mario are all on Bielsa’s radar as he looks to improve the squad.
Sheffield United vs Leeds Prediction
Both teams to score - BET NOW
Let it be known that the last time these teams met in the EFL Championship in 2018-19, the games were won by the away team with under 2.5 goals scored. In fact, both games were won to nil. Expect those trends to end on Sunday at Bramall Lane. Leeds United have shown they cannot defend against Premier League teams. Sheffield United cannot either. Leeds United’s matchday 1 and 2 games finished with both teams scoring.
Over 2.5 goals scored - BET NOW
Expect the trend of Leeds United games in the Premier League finishing with over 2.5 goals to continue this weekend. Leeds have conceded 7.0 goals over the course of 180 minutes. Sheffield United allowed 3.0 goals across the opening 180 minutes of their campaign. Neither side are showing much defensive strength currently. The big question will be: Can Robin Koch avoid giving away a penalty this weekend?
Patrick Bamford to score anytime - BET NOW
Striker Patrick Bamford bagged the game winner against Fulham at the weekend. The striker has two goals in two games this term. Bamford averages 1.99 shots per 90 minutes and 0.11 expected goals per 90 minutes. His two goals defy both of those figures. How good has Bamford been over the course of two games? His expected goals total for this season is just 0.17.
Bamford isn’t the only player with two goals this season for Leeds United. Helder Costa and Mateusz Klich have combined to score four more goals (two apiece). Leeds United’s attack should smother Sheffield United leading the game to finish with over 2.5 goals scored. Expect the Whites to be open at the back as well as they pile forward to score.
Leeds United should put more hurt on Sheffield United on Sunday at Bramall Lane. The Blades have been poor in attack and their defence hasn’t been great either. Sheffield United have not had many good goal scoring opportunities as the striker corps has not got great service. The service should continue to be poor as Sheffield United again lose this weekend. The pressure will increase on Wilder and company.
