Wolverhampton Wanderers stumbled in the race for the top four at the weekend falling to Arsenal at Molineux 2-0. With both Manchester United and Chelsea winning, Wolves now find themselves chasing the pack. Nuno Espirito Santo’s team are three points back of Manchester United and five from Chelsea. They cannot afford to fall further back on Wednesday night at Bramall Lane.
Sheffield United have got things back under control after restarting the Premier League in poor form. The Blades have taken four points from the last six possible. On matchday 33, they grabbed a 1-1 draw away to Burnley. Four points separate the Blades from Wolves and five from the top five. In spite of Sheffield United’s blip to restart the campaign, they still have the chance to catch the European places.
The last time these sides met at Molineux, they finished 1-1 as Wolverhampton Wanderers came from behind in the second half to gain a draw. Sheffield United’s Lys Mousset scored in the second minute but Matt Doherty’s 64th-minute goal gave Wolves a share of the spoils.
Both sides have everything to gain with a victory. Which side will prevail and inch closer to the top five?
These teams have a history of playing in the EFL Championship and League One over the last decade. As recently as the 2013-14 season, Sheffield United and Wolverhampton Wanderers were both playing in the third tier of English football. How far both have come in such a short span of time.
Wolverhampton Wanderers are unbeaten in seven of their last eight games in all competitions against Sheffield United. Four of those seven games ended in wins. However, that time span stretches back to the 2008-09 EFL Championship season. History dating that far back should matter little on Wednesday night due to the turnover of players both sides have experienced.
Santo’s team have the third-best away points total in the Premier League with 27 from 48 points possible. Only Liverpool and Manchester City have better points totals away from home. Five straight matches have ended without defeat and that includes three consecutive wins.
Sheffield United have collected 27 points from 48 at Bramall Lane. They have not been easy to defeat on their own turf claiming eight wins from 16 games. Wilder’s team have posted back to back wins at home and will fancy their chances against Wolves in midweek.
Wilder has four players out with injury for the midweek clash against Wolves. John Lundstram, John Fleck, Luke Freeman, and Leon Clarke are all ruled out of the match. Lundstram and Fleck are key misses as both have been excellent in front of goal this season.
According to Wilder, Lundstram, Fleck and Freeman are all out for two weeks at the very least. Clarke is likely to miss around the same amount of time for the Blades
Santo continues to have tremendous luck with injuries at Molineux. The manager has no players currently on the injured list and goes into the final five games of the season with a full squad to pick from. Wolverhampton Wanderers not only have their eyes on finishing in the top four, but next month’s Europa League restart gives them the chance to compete in Europe once more.
Wolverhampton Wanderers go into their second leg last 16 tie against Olympiacos after drawing 1-1 in the first leg in Greece. Wolves have an away goals advantage heading into the match. If Wolves fancy their chances of getting into the top four in the Premier League, they must overcome a difficult set of fixtures to finish out the season. After travelling to Bramall Lane, Wolverhampton Wanderers play Everton, Burnley, Crystal Palace, and Chelsea. None of their final five games are gimmes and Santo must do everything to get his side wins.
Both teams not to score - BET NOW
Sheffield United are not the most prolific team in front of goal in the division. They have struggled to put the ball in the back of the net on a variety of occasions this season. Wolverhampton Wanderers have a good defence conceding just 17 times on the road. The Blades could find it difficult to find the back of the net. Wolves have won to nil in back to back away fixtures. Three of Sheffield United’s last six home matches ended with both teams not scoring goals.
Under 2.5 goals scored - BET NOW
The previous meeting this season between the clubs ended with under 2.5 goals scored. Wednesday's match is likely to follow the same trend. Wolverhampton Wanderers have seen five straight matches finish with under 2.5 goals tallied in the league. Three of Sheffield United’s last six league matches ended with under 2.5 goals scored.
Raul Jimenez to score anytime - BET NOW
Raul Jimenez has been brilliant for Wolves since arriving in the summer of 2018. Although he failed to score against Arsenal at the weekend, he remains one of the league’s most prolific strikers. Jimenez has scored 15 goals in 33 league games for Wolves. He is linked to both Manchester United and Chelsea, and if rumours are to be believed, wants to leave Molineux.
Wolverhampton Wanderers are in danger of losing both of their top attacking players. Jimenez is linked to Manchester United and Chelsea while Adama Traore could be Liverpool bound. The club have not come out to deny either player will leave.
Santo’s team have the chance to do great things in the Europa League in August. However, before they get there, they must finish out the last five games of the Premier League season. They have a difficult schedule but can start the final five-match stretch with an away win or draw at Bramall Lane. Wolves have collected seven wins and six draws on the road. Expect them to gain a win or draw once more on Wednesday.
