Newmarket begin their three-day Cambridgeshire Meeting on Thursday with an eight-race card (13:15-17:20) at Flat Headquarters.

The highlight on day one is the Group 3 Tattersalls Stakes (15:00) over seven furlongs and our racing expert has three fancies for the meeting.

Thursday's Newmarket Predictions

Gale Force Maya to win and each-way - BET NOW

It's ever so hard to knock Gale Force Maya and Michael Dods' charge should have a leading say in this Premier Fillies' Handicap over six furlongs at Headquarters.

The four-year-old has won four times in just 13 starts on turf and has also made the frame in another six of those outings, ensuring she boasts a strike-rate of 31 percent coming into this contest.

She recorded a Carlisle hat-trick last season over this distance but hasn't managed to get her head in front since. Not for the lack of effort, with a pair of runner-up finishes at Thirsk (7f) and Pontefract (6f) this month showing her well-being. From an unchanged mark she's fancied to give this a real go.

Qaader to win and each-way - BET NOW

Just six runners for the Tattersalls Stakes, the feature event on day one, and La Barrosa is a short price to bag this for Charlie Appleby. The 750,000 gns colt looked well above average when making a winning debut at Ascot this month over 7f, form that has already been franked by two of the beaten horses winning next time. He's got plenty more to come no doubt and is the one to beat.

Mark Johnston's Qaader is not without a chance based on his Royal Ascot second in the Coventry Stakes. It hasn't gone to plan for the Night Of Thunder colt in two starts since but he eases in class now and tackles this longer trip for the first time.

Coming from this yard, it won't be a surprise to find that he bounces back to firm and/or improves for the longer journey and a replication of early summer form puts him in the melting pot.

First Winter to win and each-way - BET NOW

King Ragnar and First Winter could be the pair to focus on in this mile handicap. Roger Varian's challenger was a winner at Leicester (7f, good to firm) in July and has held his form since. This month's narrow Yarmouth defeat off his current mark was another rock-solid effort but he may need improvement in the first-time blinkers to pocket this prize.

First Winter too has enjoyed a consistent summer and comes here bidding for a third win in his last four starts. He made every yard at Sandown last month having dropped back to this distance, hanging on gamely in a bunched finish.

The second and fourth home both scored next time from increased marks and a 3lb hike looks very workable for Charlie Appleby's son of Dubawi as such.
