Atletico Madrid are slipping in the La Liga title race. Diego Simeone’s team are winless in three of their last four league matches and are coming off of an unthinkable 2-0 loss to Levante at home. To add insult to injury, Atletico Madrid lost 1-0 to Chelsea in midweek in the Champions League and failed to create anything against the Blues’ defence.

Now, Los Colchoneros head to the Estadio de la Cermica to face off with Unai Emery’s Villarreal. The Yellow Submarine are sixth in the La Liga standings and 11 points off of the top four. Emery will be focused on solidifying a top-six place this season and qualification to the Europa League for next campaign.

Villarreal are coming off of a Thursday night, 2-1 win, against Red Bull Salzburg to advance to the last 16 of the competition. Despite their good form in the Europa League, Villarreal have not won a La Liga game in their last six attempts. They drew five of their last six games and collected five points from 18 on offer.

The last match between these teams in La Liga was a bore nil-nil draw. Both sides are good defensive teams as Atletico Madrid have allowed just 16 scores and Villarreal have given up 25 goals. Will Sunday night’s game be another dull stalemate between the sides?

Villarreal vs Atletico Madrid Betting Odds

Atletico Madrid go into matchday 25 a mere three points ahead of Real Madrid. There once seemingly impossible lead at the top of the table has been reduced, although they have a game in hand. More dropped points this weekend, which could happen, would further open the door for Real Madrid to run through.

Atletico Madrid are at odds of 11/8 to win on Sunday night at Estadio de la Cermica against the Yellow Submarine. Villarreal are unbeaten in their last five home games against Atletico Madrid in La Liga. They posted a record of 3W-2D-0L against Los Colchoneros at home and the capital club have not won at Estadio de la Cermica since the 2014-15 campaign. An Atletico Madrid win is not a foregone conclusion when these teams clash on Sunday night.

Villarreal are at odds of 12/5 to win at full-time against Simeone’s side. The pressure of winning could be taking its toll on an Atletico Madrid team that are suddenly finding it difficult to score goals. They did score 12 goals in their last six games but shockingly allowed nine goals to opponents.

The Yellow Submarine drew five of their last six matches and struggled to score goals in those six games. They tallied just seven scores and gave up eight.

Villarreal vs Atletico Madrid Team News

Emery has three players on the injury list heading into the game this weekend at home. Midfielder Francis Coquelin is ruled out of the fixture and won’t return until March. Coquelin is nursing an ankle injury. Mario Gaspar is also set to miss the game against Atletico Madrid. The defender is being kept out by a muscle injury. Vincente Iborra is out of action until next season after enduring an ACL injury.

Atletico Madrid full-back Kieran Tierney is nearing a return from a suspension but still has around three games left to run on his suspension. Defender Jose Gimenez is a doubt due to a knock and may not return until next month. The same goes for Yannick Carrasco. The Belgian is recovering from a muscle injury.

Simeone’s team failed to score in either of their last two games in all competitions. They lost 2-0 to Levante on matchday 24 in a shock result. Levante managed a draw and win over Atletico Madrid in the space of four days in La Liga.

Atletico Madrid followed up that game with a 1-0 loss to Chelsea in which they failed to tally a shot on target. Despite the money spent on players like Joao Felix, Thomas Lemar and others in recent years, it is Luis Suarez that makes the team tick. However, with Simeone’s defence-first tactics, it is understandable just why this team struggle to create goalscoring chances in big games.

A nil-nil scoreline is what occurred when these teams met at the Wanda Stadium earlier this season. The same can be said for Atletico Madrid. Based on the way things are going in La Liga, it can be believed that Atletico Madrid will slip up and allow Real Madrid to overtake them in the title race.

Villarreal have drawn the most games of any team in La Liga this season. Thirteen of their 24 games in the league ended in draws. Emery is experiencing a similar stint at Villarreal as he did at Arsenal. The difference is that he has less expensive, high-quality talent and the expectations are lower.

Atletico Madrid could slip up once more this weekend. A draw and Real Madrid win on Monday night against Real Sociedad would see Zinedine Zidane’s team pull closer.
