Newly-promoted West Brom host Chelsea on Saturday at the Hawthorns in desperate need of a win. The Baggies lost on opening day to Leicester City, 3-0, before losing 5-2 to Everton on matchday 2. No Premier League team have conceded as many goals as West Brom after two games. Now, West Brom host a Chelsea team that have plenty of potential.
The Blues claimed a 3-1 win on opening day versus Brighton but sank to a dismal 2-0 loss at home to Liverpool. In spite of the heavy spending Chelsea have done in the transfer market, neither Timo Werner nor Kai Havertz did anything exceptional in those opening league games. Werner did gain Chelsea a penalty in both games, yet his speed and finishing were non-factors, especially against Liverpool.
Chelsea go into the game as sportsbooks’ favourite to claim a victory. With West Brom playing so poorly in defence, this could be Werner and Havertz’s time to shine. Havertz did score a hat-trick in the Carabao Cup in midweek against Barnsley. The Blues won 6-0, but thrashing lowly Barnsley is completely different than playing in the Premier League.
Lampard’s team are on a six-game unbeaten run against West Brom in the Premier League. Can they make it a run of seven-matches unbeaten this weekend?
West Brom last played Chelsea during the 2017-18 Premier League campaign. Chelsea won both of those matches by a combined 7-0 scoreline. The Blues put over 3.0 goals past West Brom in both fixtures. The last four matches between the teams in the Premier League saw Chelsea win to nil.
Chelsea posted a 3-1 win against Brighton in their only Premier League away match of the season thus far. They scored from the penalty spot through Jorginho in the first half – he missed Chelsea’s penalty versus Liverpool –and Reece James and Kourt Zouma scored in the second period.
West Brom conceded three goals without reply against Leicester City when they met to kick off the campaign. The Foxes’ three goals all came in the second half. Slaven Bilic has an EFL Championship-quality squad. They will struggle against the Blues and should fight relegation as it stands.
Chelsea have exceeded their expected points total this season. They have tallied an expected point figure of just 1.58. Meanwhile, defensively their expected goals allowed is 4.14 compared to an actual total of three. The Blues may be living dangerously by slightly overachieving after just two weeks.
Bilic has injuries piling up at the Hawthorns. Centre-back Ahmed Hegazi is ruled out of the game as is Kenneth Zohore. Neither player has a return date and both are major blows to West Brom. Striker Hal Robson-Kanu is likely to miss the game through a leg muscle strain.
Robson-Kanu may not be the most prolific player in the West Brom team in terms of goals, but his absence does put a strain on the squad. Kamil Grosicki’s participation is in doubt due to a lower back issue. Full-back Keiran Gibbs is ruled out after his first-half sending off against Everton last weekend.
Chelsea new signing Hakim Ziyech is ruled out once more. The forward has not played for Chelsea after suffering a knee injury. He could be back in early October. Christian Pulisic continues his rehab from a thigh injury. He continues to have setbacks in training with the injury.
Centre-back Andreas Christensen will miss the game after being sent off in the first half versus Liverpool last weekend. His rugby tackle on Sadio Mane resulted in a sending off and Lampard removing Havertz from the game.
Both teams to score: NO - BET NOW
Chelsea have won four straight games against West Brom to nil in the Premier League. The Baggies’ poor finishing in their opening two matches does not bode well for the home side getting on the scoresheet. Chelsea’s defence is suspect. Lampard isn’t great tactically when it comes to defence. However, Chelsea did get a morale-boosting win against Barnsley in the Carabao Cup in midweek, 6-0.

Timo Werner to score anytime - BET NOW
Timo Werner has failed to score in two Premier League matches thus far. Pressure is mounting on the striker after his 28-goal return in 34 Bundesliga matches for RB Leipzig last season. It isn’t just Werner’s goalscoring that has been off. The striker hasn’t consistently shown the pace he is known for as a Blue. Yes, he did earn a penalty against both Brighton and Liverpool, but his shooting wasn’t great. West Brom’s defence should offer Werner the chance to finally get onto the scoresheet as a Chelsea player.
The striker averages 3.00 shots per 90 minutes after two matches. He has an expected goal total of 0.45. He has an expected goal total per 90 minutes of 0.23. Havertz got off the mark in midweek with a hat-trick. Could Werner do the same against a week Baggies defence?
West Brom conceded eight goals across their two opening matches. The question for Saturday truly is: How many goals will Chelsea score? They need to win to keep pace with Manchester City and Liverpool. Both of those teams, the two favourites to win the league, have difficult matches this weekend.
A win for the Blues and dropped points elsewhere could close the gap between the clubs. Chelsea should get a win with West Brom struggling defensively yet again.
West Brom vs Chelsea will kick-off at 17:30 on Saturday.
