A red-hot Chelsea head to the east end of London on Wednesday night to face off with lowly West Ham. The Hammers are just outside of the bottom three and staring relegation in the face. West Ham are level on points with both 18th-placed Bournemouth and 19th-placed Aston Villa but outside the relegation zone thanks to a slightly better goal difference. David Moyes’ side has lost three straight matches in the top flight.
West Ham have won just three times in 14 matches in all competitions under Moyes’ management. Two of those wins came in 12 Premier League fixtures and his leadership hasn’t improved West Ham’s survival hopes.
Chelsea are coming off of a great week of wins. Frank Lampard’s side defeated Manchester City 2-1 at Stamford Bridge last week to give Liverpool the Premier League title. The Blues followed up the victory with an FA Cup quarterfinal win against Leicester City on Sunday at the King Power Stadium. Chelsea were second-best for much of the quarterfinal match but still managed the win through a 63rd-minute goal from Ross Barkley.
In spite of Chelsea’s great form, it will be in the front of their minds that West Ham claimed a victory at Stamford Bridge, 1-0, in November thanks to a goal from Aaron Cresswell.
West Ham do have an excellent record against Chelsea in recent seasons. The Hammers are unbeaten in seven of their last 10 matches versus Chelsea in all competitions. Four of those seven fixtures ended in victory for West Ham. Chelsea have not won at the London Stadium since the 2016-17 Premier League season and could face another shock this week when visiting east London.
Although West Ham have played well against Chelsea over the last few seasons, they have recorded just 15 points from 45 possible at the London Stadium. It is the second-worst points total at home in the division. The good news for Moyes is West Ham have gone unbeaten in four of their last six home fixtures. However, since the Premier League restarted, West Ham were beaten 2-0 by Wolverhampton Wanderers and Tottenham Hotspur, respectively.
Chelsea have posted the third-best points total in the Premier League with 27 from 45 possible. They are unbeaten in three straight league fixtures on the road. The last time Chelsea played in the league away from Stamford Bridge, they came from behind against Aston Villa to win 2-1.
The Blues’ biggest issue with playing on the road has been conceding goals. They have allowed 25 on their travels.
Lampard could be without two of his most important players on Wednesday night. Forward Christian Pulisic is suffering from tight calf and is listed as 50% fit to play on Wednesday. It is likely he will be kept out of the game to prepare for future fixtures. Pulisic is in great form having scored against Aston Villa and Manchester City in back to back Premier League matches.
Centre-back Andreas Christensen is also struggling with an injury and could be held out of the fixture. He has a hip issue that could be given more time to heal with the fixtures coming fast and furious. Meanwhile, fellow defender Fikayo Tomori is ruled out through his own injury.
Moyes is struggling to find a group of grinders to put on the pitch to get the team out of the relegation zone. Midfielder Robert Snodgross is ruled out of the game with a lower back issue and will miss the next few games. Striker Sebastien Haller is likely to sit out the fixture with a hip injury. His absence will take away one of the club’s biggest goal threats. Defender Arthur Masuaku is doubtful for the match due to a twisted ankle.
The manager still has plenty of options to choose from. He needs players like Felipe Anderson, a player signed for big money, to step up for the first time in their West Ham career.
Chelsea to win both halves - BET NOW
Chelsea may have lost to West Ham 1-0 when they met at Stamford Bridge earlier this season, but this is a different team now. Sure, Chelsea struggled at times against Leicester City on Sunday in the FA Cup, but West Ham are nowhere near as good. The Blues were impressive against Manchester City on matchday 31 and should be ruthless against a bad West Ham defence.
Chelsea to win to nil - BET NOW
Since the Premier League restarted, West Ham have lost both games to nil. Against both Wolverhampton Wanderers and Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham lost 2-0 in those games, respectively. They are one of the league’s worst sides and Moyes has not improved the team. Kepa Arrizabalaga has recorded six clean sheets and could move that to a seventh on matchday 32.
Mason Mount to score anytime - BET NOW
Mason Mount has certainly improved as the season has gone on. The attacking midfielder paired well with Pulisic against Manchester City and could get back to scoring goals versus a poor West Ham. Mount has six goals and five assists in 31 league appearances for Chelsea this season. He has contributed to 20% of Chelsea’s goals this season both scoring and creating.
West Ham have conceded 54 goals in the league after 31 games. They concede 1.7 goals per game while scoring a mere 1.1 goals a match. The Hammers are lucky there are three teams worse off in the league or they would be stuck in the relegation zone.
The Hammers have the chance to save their season with upcoming games against Newcastle United, Burnley, Norwich City, Watford, Manchester United, and Aston Villa. The club will have four six-point matches to finish out the campaign.
Unless Moyes suddenly improve overnight, Chelsea should win the fixture on Wednesday and possibly move ahead of Leicester City in the top four.
