The Europa League quarterfinals are set with eight teams left in the competition. The second-tier tournament now moves to Germany for the final stage of the competition. All games will now be single elimination with spring of games taking place. The quarterfinals, semifinals and final of the Europa League will be played between August 10th and August 21 in a 12-day sprint of games.
Wolverhampton Wanderers have one of the most difficult ties of the quarterfinals as they take on five-time UEFA Cup/Europa League winners Sevilla. The Spanish side may not contend for La Liga titles, but they are regular winners of the Europa League. Julen Lopetegui’s team last won the competition in 2016 capping off a trio of consecutive Europa League wins. Of course, those wins came under different managers as Lopetegui is still in his first campaign as Rojiblancos manager.
Sevilla defeated Roma 2-0 in the round of 16 as the two clubs were forced to play a one-off game due to the coronavirus. The game had a frantic feel to it like no other game in the round of 16. That atmosphere should carry over to all of the quarterfinal games as one mistake means the loser is out of the competition.
Wolverhampton Wanderers saw off Olimpiacos at Molineux on Thursday. They now have three games to go to win their first-ever European trophy. Nuno Espirit Santo has the squad to do it, but Sevilla will be their most difficult test yet.
Wolves vs Sevilla Betting Odds
Wolverhampton Wanderers started their journey in the Europa League over a year ago. Santo’s team had to go through the qualifying rounds to get into the group stage. The amount of games played did affect Wolves in the Premier League as they just missed out on qualifying for both the Champions League and Europa League through the competition.
Tuesday night’s game versus Sevilla will be Wolverhampton Wanderers 59th game in all competitions this season. In comparison, the Europa League quarterfinal match will be Sevilla’s 52nd in all competitions. Both managers have small squads and count on the players in the team to continually get results.
While Wolves missed out on European qualification through the Premier League, Sevilla secured fourth-place and Champions League football for next season. They had a strong first season under Lopetegui after the manager’s debacles with the Spanish nation team and Real Madrid.
These teams have combined for 57 clean sheets in all competitions this season. Tuesday night’s game should be a low-scoring affair between two well drilled teams. The club that gets through to the semifinals will face off with either Manchester United or FC Copenhagen. Those teams face off on Monday night.
Wolves vs Sevilla Team News
Santo will be without one of his most in-form players on Tuesday night as Daniel Podence is suspended due to yellow card accumulation. Ridiculously, Wolverhampton Wanderers’ No. 10 picked up most of those yellow cards while playing in the competition with Olimpiacos prior to his January move to Molineux. He has only played once for Wolves in the Europa League.
Wolverhampton Wanderers are sweating the fitness of starting left wing-back Jonny Otto. The Spaniard went down with a strange knee injury in the first half versus Olimpiacos on Thursday. He seemed to twist his knee while attempting to control the ball. Ruben Vinagre will take Otto’s place if the injury is severe enough to keep him out. The problem Santo now faces is that his left-sided players are unable to play in the quarterfinal.
Sevilla’s dangerman is former AC Milan, Genoa, and Marseille forward Lucas Ocampos. The 26-year-old has played for his fair share of clubs but that is due to being in-demand. Ocampos has been the centre of Sevilla’s attack all season long. Lopetegui will deploy Ocampos on the right side of a front three with former Liverpool and AC Milan forward Suso on the opposite flank.
Wolves vs Sevilla Prediction
Under 2.5 goals - BET NOW
Both clubs are very defensive and that should show once more on Tuesday when they meet in the quarterfinal. Sevilla have kept 25 clean sheets in all competitions this season. That is three more clean sheets than Wolverhampton Wanderers have kept in 2019-20. Sevilla may not come to mind when think of defensive teams, however, Lopetegui has turned them into a side that restricts goal scoring chances. Roma tallied a mere seven shots with one on target in the round of 16.
Both teams to score - BET NOW
A single-leg match means there are no second chances. Wolverhampton Wanderers have come a long way to get to this point. Sevilla have players in the squad that have been here before. The two clubs are just three steps away from winning a major trophy and both will go for goal when the opportunity arises. It should be an outstanding fixture to watch.
Raul Jimenez to score anytime - BET NOW
Daniel Podence earned Wolverhampton Wanderers a penalty versus Olimpiacos and Raul Jimenez coolly put the ball into the back of the net. The Wolves striker is having a phenomenal season in front of goal with 27 goals in 54 matches. Jimenez is the focal point of Wolves’ attack and the club should put crosses into him if the chances arise on Tuesday night.
Wolverhampton Wanderers started strongly against Olimpiacos but did waver at times during the game giving the Greeks a chance to get a foothold. The Premier League club must do better against Sevilla of making chances count when they are on top of the game. Sevilla have the ability to make Wolves pay for not taking their chances.
Sevilla didn’t let Roma up to breathe in their round of 16 tie. Roma looked ordinary against Sevilla as the Spanish club smothered the Italians. Tuesday night’s game will see two very good defensive teams clash and the end result could be a draw. These teams may need extra-time and possibly penalties to sort out which one will make it to the semifinals.
