After a four year wait the World Cup is nearly here – and despite a less than mouth-watering clash between Russia and Saudi Arabia kicking off proceedings, there is definitely money to be made! Ross Casey offers his World Cup betting tips...
The bookies have made Russia the firm favourites to win this match at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow, making Stanislav Cherchesov’s side a best price of 4/9.
I do struggle to see how this is the case as Russia have picked up just six victories from their last 27 matches across all competitions and are heading into this tournament on the back of a seven match winless streak. Quite how a side with those stats can be 4/9 on to win any game is beyond me!
Saudi Arabia are a best price of 17/2 with Betfred at the time of writing to pick up the upset victory - make sure you use our odds comparison service here as that is better value than the 7/1 some will settle for elsewhere!
Saudi Arabia Double Chance @ 2/1 - BET NOW
Both Teams To Score @ 8/5 - BET NOW
I have two recommended Russia v Saudi Arabia tips. I will be going against the market twice by backing Saudi Arabia double chance and also both teams to score.
As I have already mentioned, Russia are in terrible form of late, so despite home advantage, I give Saudi Arabia plenty of hope in getting at least a point from this opener. The stats are against them in that no host nation has ever lost an opening World Cup match, but considering they have won two of five and lost just 2-1 to both Germany and Italy of late, you get the impression they have been terribly underrated by the bookies.
Both teams to score can also land here at a very big price. Five of the last seven opening games have seen both teams score and both of these sides have netted in four of their last five matches. That includes three for Russia against Spain and breaking down both Germany and Italy for Saudi Arabia.
Below are the result for the last six games games played by Russia and Saudi Arabia. The winners for each game are highlighted in bold.
Russia 1 - 1 Turkey (05/06/2018)
Austria 1 - 0 Russia (30/05/2018)
Russia 1 - 3 France (27/03/2018)
Russia 0 - 3 Brazil (23/03/2018)
Russia 3 - 3 Spain (14/11/2017)
Russia 0 - 1 Argentina (11/11/2017)
Germany 2 - 1 Saudi Arabia (08/06/2018)
Saudi Arabia 0 - 3 Peru (03/06/2018)
Italy 2 - 1 Saudi Arabia (28/05/2018)
Saudi Arabia 2 - 0 Greece (15/05/2018)
Saudi Arabia 2 - 0 Algeria (09/05/2018)
Belgium 4 - 0 Saudi Arabia (27/03/2018)

I’m not necessarily sure that punters realise the importance of our odds comparison service…
For example if you fancy former Chelsea man Yuri Zhirkov to score in this one, he is a best price 13/2. There’s a remarkable difference in his price when you consider his worst price is 4/1. Why wouldn’t you use our site to peruse the anytime goalscorer market and ensure you get the best possible odds?
